Bhubaneswar, Sep 14 (PTI) – In a thrilling encounter at the Kalinga Stadium, Chennaiyin FC showcased their resilience and skill by defeating Odisha FC with a 3-2 victory, thus ending Odisha’s remarkable 569-day unbeaten run at home in the Indian Super League on Saturday. The match witnessed striking performances from Farukh Choudhary and Daniel Chima Chukwu, whose contributions were pivotal in the come-from-behind win for Chennaiyin.
The game began with high intensity as Samik Mitra made an early save to deny Odisha a quick lead. Moments later, Farukh Choudhary’s appeal for a penalty was waved off by the referee. However, a controversial decision came when Hugo Boumous went down under a challenge from Samik, resulting in a penalty for Odisha. Diego Mauricio capitalized on this opportunity, confidently converting the spot-kick to put Odisha ahead.
Chennaiyin FC, undeterred by the early setback, fought back vigorously. Connor Shields had an effort blocked midway through the first half, and Farukh narrowly missed from close range. The visitors’ defense was tested again as Samik Mitra made a crucial save to prevent Odisha from doubling their lead after Hnamte’s superb free-kick struck the upright.
The turning point came in the second half when Chennaiyin’s persistence paid off. Farukh Choudhary netted the equalizer with a simple tap-in after Shields burst into the box and delivered a perfect assist. Just minutes later, Farukh seized an opportunity from a wayward pass by Amrinder Singh, squeezing the ball through Ahmed Jahouh’s legs to put Chennaiyin ahead.
Chennaiyin further solidified their lead in the 69th minute when right-back Laldinliana Renthlei delivered an impeccable cross into the box. Daniel Chima Chukwu met the ball with a powerful half-turn volley, making it 3-1 for the visitors.
Odisha FC managed to pull one back in stoppage time through Roy Krishna, but it wasn’t enough to alter the outcome. Chennaiyin held their ground and secured all three points, marking a significant victory.
Looking ahead, Chennaiyin FC will aim to build on this momentum as they prepare for their first home game of the season against newly-promoted Mohammedan SC on September 26. Meanwhile, Odisha FC will seek redemption when they travel to New Delhi to face Punjab FC on September 20.
This match not only highlighted the competitive spirit of both teams but also set the stage for an exciting season ahead in the Indian Super League.
