New Delhi: Star wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan is poised to make a long-awaited return to Team India, potentially being selected for the T20I series against Bangladesh. Kishan, who last represented India in November of the previous year, had taken a hiatus from international cricket to address mental health issues. His absence was later extended due to disciplinary reasons, leading to his exclusion from the national team.
Kishan’s name was notably missing from the BCCI central contracts list, a consequence of not prioritizing domestic cricket during his time away from national duties. Additionally, he was overlooked for India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad. However, the left-handed batsman has showcased remarkable form since his return to competitive cricket in the DY Patil T20 Cup in August this year, making a strong case for his reinstatement in the Indian team.
According to a report by PTI, Shubman Gill is expected to be rested from T20Is following the conclusion of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. India’s schedule includes two Tests followed by three T20Is against the visiting Bangladeshi team on home soil. Given the short interval between these series, several regular Test players are likely to be rested to manage workload ahead of an extensive season in the longest format of the game.
The report further suggests that Ishan Kishan could be named in the T20I squad if Rishabh Pant is rested post the Test series against Bangladesh. Pant is a crucial component of India’s Test team and is slated to be the first-choice wicket-keeper batter for all 10 Tests remaining in the season, which includes a significant five-Test series against Australia during their tour Down Under.
Kishan has been in stellar form since his comeback to competitive cricket, demonstrating his prowess with the bat. After recovering from injury and missing the initial round of matches in the Duleep Trophy, he made a striking return for Ruturaj Gaikwad-led India C against India B. Kishan’s performance was nothing short of sensational as he scored a commanding 111 runs off just 126 balls, featuring 14 fours and 3 sixes, marking a triumphant return to first-class cricket.
Prior to this, Kishan had already made headlines by scoring a century for Jharkhand against Madhya Pradesh in the Buchi Babu tournament. These impressive performances have bolstered his chances of reclaiming his spot in the national team. Should he be included in the T20I squad against Bangladesh, Kishan will be eager to seize every opportunity and make a significant impact on his return to international cricket.
