Following the triumphant success of “Lolo and the Kid,” the visionary writer-director Benedict Mique returns with another compelling narrative that mirrors contemporary realities while honoring the indomitable Filipino spirit and their deep-rooted love for family. His latest cinematic creation, “Maple Leaf Dreams,” is set to captivate audiences as an official entry in the prestigious Sinag Maynila Film Festival, scheduled for screening from September 4th to 8th in select local cinemas. The film will then enjoy a wide national release starting September 25th.

This ambitious project is brought to life by the collaborative efforts of 7K Entertainment, Benedict’s own Lonewolf Films, ABS-CBN’s Star Magic, and is distributed by Quantum Films.

Starring in the lead roles are the dynamic and promising love team of multi-awarded actor-singer LA Santos and the enchanting screen darling Kira Balinger. They portray Macky and Molly, a devoted couple who venture to Canada in pursuit of a better future for their families. Their journey is fraught with obstacles that test their resilience, love, and commitment to their shared dreams.

The stellar cast also features acclaimed actors Joey Marquez and Snooky Serna as Molly’s parents, and Ricky Davao as Macky’s father. Special appearances include Malou Crisologo, Jong Cuenco, Jeff Gaitan, Hannah Thalia Vito, Luke Alford, Kanishia Santos, Benito Mique, Wilson Martinito, and Canada-based beauty queen Bea Rose Santiago.

Director Benedict Mique was inspired to create “Maple Leaf Dreams” due to the increasing number of Filipinos migrating to Canada. He notes that while Filipinos once primarily sought better opportunities in the US and Europe, Canada has now become a favored destination.

While numerous local films have explored the narratives of Filipinos abroad, “Maple Leaf Dreams” distinguishes itself with its timely relevance and authentic portrayal of the Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) experience. LA Santos, a three-time Best Supporting Actor, emphasizes that the film aims to depict the real-life struggles and triumphs of OFWs in Canada, highlighting the challenges they face in unfamiliar territories.

To ensure an accurate representation, Director Benedict spent several months in Toronto conducting extensive research and engaging with numerous Filipinos living and working there. Many of these individuals were even cast in the film.

Kira Balinger adds depth to this perspective by pointing out that when people think of OFWs, they often envision the successful family member abroad. However, “Maple Leaf Dreams” delves into the arduous journey and sacrifices that lead to that success.

The filming experience in Canada provided invaluable lessons both on and off the screen for the entire team. LA reflects on his character’s journey, stating that life is challenging but the people we love and share our lives with can lift us higher.
