Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 17 (ANI): As veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan nears the twilight of his illustrious career, Bangladesh’s head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe has identified Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the emerging star poised to fill the void when Shakib eventually hangs up his boots.

Shakib, now 37 years old, is approaching the final chapters of his career in international cricket. With the Champions Trophy scheduled in Pakistan next year, there is speculation that he might retire from the ODI format following this prestigious tournament.

Hathurusinghe emphasized Miraz’s readiness to take on greater responsibilities for Bangladesh when Shakib retires. Reflecting on Shakib’s contributions, Hathurusinghe noted, “Shakib has been an instrumental figure in Bangladesh cricket. His presence offers us incredible flexibility, allowing us to balance the team either with additional bowlers or batsmen thanks to his all-round prowess. His experience and adaptability are invaluable assets.”

Shakib’s extensive career, marked by countless matches and consistent performance, has been a cornerstone for the team. Hathurusinghe added, “He is arguably one of the most seasoned international players currently active. Beyond his technical skills, Shakib brings a wealth of experience and a winning mindset that elevates the entire team.”

Turning attention to Miraz, Hathurusinghe highlighted his impressive performance during Bangladesh’s historic Test series win against Pakistan. Miraz scored 155 runs at an impressive average of 77.50 across two Tests and emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 10 dismissals at an average of 18.60. “In the past five to six years, Miraz has shown remarkable improvement,” Hathurusinghe remarked. “His bowling has always been his primary strength, but he has significantly enhanced his batting skills. Additionally, he is an exceptional fielder.”

Looking ahead to Bangladesh’s upcoming Test series in India, Hathurusinghe acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by India’s spin duo, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. To counter this spin threat, Bangladesh will rely heavily on their experienced batter, Mushfiqur Rahim. The 37-year-old Rahim has been meticulously practicing sweep shots and variations against off-spinners to prepare for the series.

“Mushfiq mentioned to me during our flight to India that he averages 55 here. He is an extraordinary player,” Hathurusinghe shared. “His preparation is unmatched; the only comparison I can think of is Sachin Tendulkar. Mushfiq’s professionalism and attention to detail are exemplary.”

The much-anticipated two-match Test series will commence on Thursday at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, with the second match set to start on September 27 in Kanpur. This series promises to be a significant test for both teams as they gear up for intense competition.
