KOHIMA — NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) is set to kick off their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season with an exciting away match against the freshly promoted Mohammedan SC at the historic Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. The match is scheduled for Monday evening at 7:30 pm.

Returning to Kolkata for the first time since their triumphant Durand Cup victory, the Highlanders are eager to start the new season on a high note. This match holds particular significance as Mohammedan SC is making its much-anticipated debut in the ISL after clinching the I-League championship last season.

During the pre-match press conference held on Saturday, NEUFC head coach Juan Pedro Benali provided an in-depth analysis of the upcoming fixture. He described the match as “dangerous” and “difficult,” citing several critical factors.

Coach Benali pointed out that Mohammedan SC boasts a squad filled with talented players and is led by a skilled and strategic coach. He emphasized the importance of NEUFC adhering to their game plan and maintaining composure throughout the match.

Moreover, Benali highlighted that Mohammedan SC would be highly motivated to defeat NorthEast United FC, especially considering NEUFC’s recent Durand Cup success. Adding to the narrative, he mentioned that several current players of Mohammedan SC previously played for NorthEast United FC and would be keen to prove their worth against their former team.

When discussing NEUFC’s approach to the season opener, Benali stressed that each game unfolds its own unique story. He articulated that success in football hinges on achieving a balance between offensive and defensive strategies rather than concentrating solely on one aspect of play.

Mirshad Michu, the team’s goalkeeper, shared insights into the team’s morale and dynamics. He revealed that the team is in high spirits and enjoys a strong sense of unity. Their pre-season preparations began two months ago, fostering a robust camaraderie among the squad, particularly among the three goalkeepers—Gurmeet Singh, Dipesh Chauhan, and himself.

Michu elaborated on the supportive environment within the team, noting that they consistently encourage each other and are guided by their coaches. The goalkeepers share constructive feedback on each other’s performances, ensuring mutual growth and support.

With a blend of experienced leadership and cohesive teamwork, NorthEast United FC is poised for an intriguing season opener against Mohammedan SC, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter in Kolkata.
