Kolkata, Sep 15 (PTI) – As the reigning champions of the Durand Cup, NorthEast United FC is set to embark on their Indian Super League (ISL) journey with a highly anticipated match against the newly-promoted Mohammedan SC. This exciting clash will take place at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday.
Mohammedan SC earned their place in the ISL by triumphing in the I-League 2023-24 season. Their promotion marks a significant milestone for the club, as they prepare to face top-tier competition. On the other hand, NorthEast United FC, affectionately known as the Highlanders, concluded the previous ISL season in the seventh position, showcasing their competitive spirit and potential.
Mohammedan SC’s head coach, Andrey Chernyshov, emphasized that his primary focus is on allowing his players to acclimate to the rigors of the ISL. “We aim to absorb the ISL experience,” Chernyshov stated, setting realistic expectations for his squad. He encourages his team to embrace the league’s challenges, foster a fighting spirit, and gradually improve as the season progresses.
Chernyshov elaborated on his approach, saying, “Our first objective is to build a strong team for the ISL. We recognize the strength of this competition, where we will face many talented Indian and foreign players. It’s essential for us to gain experience from the ISL, fight hard in every match, and showcase quality football for our fans. This is what drives us to perform well in each game.”
NorthEast United FC enters the season buoyed by their historic victory in the Durand Cup, the first silverware in the club’s history. However, head coach Juan Pedro Benali is keen to look beyond past achievements and focus on the challenges ahead in the ISL. Reflecting on their narrow miss for playoff qualification in the 2023-24 season, Benali is determined to leave no stone unturned this time around.
“The joy of winning the Durand Cup was immense, but it was short-lived. To progress, we must move beyond that victory,” Benali remarked. “While it’s great for records and statistics, our focus now is solely on the next game.”
Benali further highlighted their strategic approach: “We adopt a mentality where every game is treated as a final. We are up against a strong team with an excellent coach in a fantastic stadium filled with passionate fans. Our approach needs to be smart, composed, and calculated.”
As both teams gear up for what promises to be an enthralling encounter, fans can look forward to a display of skill, strategy, and determination on Monday at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan.
