Kolkata, September 15 (PTI) – The reigning champions of the Durand Cup, NorthEast United FC, are set to kick off their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign by facing the newly-promoted Mohammedan SC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Monday.
Mohammedan SC clinched the I-League title for the 2023-24 season, thereby securing their promotion to the prestigious ISL. On the other hand, NorthEast United FC, known as the Highlanders, finished their previous ISL season in seventh place.
Andrey Chernyshov, the head coach of Mohammedan SC, is tempering expectations for his squad as they enter this higher level of competition. He emphasizes the importance of soaking in the ISL experience, fostering a fighting spirit, and gradually improving throughout the season. Chernyshov believes in building a robust team that can stand its ground in the ISL, understanding the tough competition they will face against skilled Indian and foreign players.
“Our primary goal is to form a strong team for the ISL. We recognize the strength of this competition and know we will be up against many talented Indian and foreign players. It’s crucial for us to internalize this ISL experience, exhibit resilience in every match, and play commendable football that excites our fans. This motivation is what drives us to perform exceptionally well in every game,” Chernyshov shared with the ISL.
Meanwhile, NorthEast United FC is riding high on their recent triumph, having secured their first-ever silverware in the club’s history by winning the Durand Cup. However, head coach Juan Pedro Benali is keen on looking ahead rather than dwelling on past successes. Missing out on playoff qualification by a narrow margin in the 2023-24 season has fueled their determination to excel in the upcoming term.
“The euphoria of winning the Durand Cup was immense, but it only lasted 24 hours. We can’t dwell on it if we want to progress. It’s great for records and statistics, but our focus must shift to the next game,” Benali remarked.
He further elaborated on their strategy, “Our mentality is to treat every game as if it’s a final. We’re up against a formidable team with an excellent coach in a fantastic stadium filled with passionate fans. Our approach needs to be smart, composed, and strategic.”
The stage is set for an exciting encounter as both teams, armed with distinct strategies and aspirations, prepare to leave their mark on this ISL season.
