Toronto International Film Festival 2024: Highly Anticipated Films and Premieres

First up is the highly anticipated romantic drama “All of You,” brought to life by the dynamic duo of Brett Goldstein and Imogen Poots. Set in a near-futuristic world where a test can determine your soulmate with absolute certainty, the film explores the complex emotional landscape that such a system could create. Brett Goldstein, celebrated for his work on “Ted Lasso,” takes on the role of Simon, while Imogen Poots plays his best friend Laura. The plot thickens when they both take the test, expecting to be matched, only to find out they are not. This revelation sets them on a journey to understand their deep feelings for each other, challenging the infallible test and the societal norms it upholds. We are keen to see Goldstein’s transition from comedy to a more serious role, promising an emotionally charged performance that showcases his versatility.

Jason Reitman returns to TIFF with “Saturday Night,” a feature that has generated considerable buzz. This project holds sentimental value as Jason’s father, Ivan Reitman, who was deeply involved with Saturday Night Live alums and offered consultation before his passing in 2022. Although current SNL brass like Lorne Michaels were not directly involved, the film promises an insider’s look at the chaotic early days of the iconic show. Featuring Gabriel LaBelle as the lead, the ensemble cast includes Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris, Kim Matula as Jane Curtin, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Matt Wood as John Belushi, and Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase. The film captures the frantic energy and raw creativity of the first broadcast during a time when the show’s future was anything but secure.

Orlando Bloom continues his career resurgence with “The Cut,” directed by Sean Ellis. This sports drama goes beyond the typical competition narrative to delve into the grueling process elite athletes endure. Bloom stars as a retired boxer striving to return to the ring, but only if he can make the weight. Known for his physically demanding roles, Bloom is set to impress with scenes showcasing his peak athletic physique. The film promises to be an underdog story reminiscent of classics like “Rocky” and “Creed,” adding emotional depth and physical intensity to Bloom’s portfolio.

Hugh Grant steps into a new genre with “Heretic,” directed by Scott Beck and Brian Woods, the original minds behind “A Quiet Place.” In this horror-thriller, Grant plays Mr. Reed, a seemingly gentle man who becomes increasingly unsettling upon meeting two nuns spreading the Mormon faith. As they spend more time with him, they discover that the idyllic setting hides sinister secrets, escalating into a terrifying battle for survival. This film aims to solidify Beck and Woods’ reputation in horror while offering Grant a role that diverges from his usual fare.

Amy Adams stars in “Nightbitch,” directed by Marielle Heller. In this darkly comedic film, Adams plays a depressed housewife who assumes a dog’s identity. The story delves into a recognized psychiatric phenomenon affecting stressed suburban women. Adams is expected to deliver a powerful performance that blends comedy with deep emotional undertones. With six Oscar nominations but no wins, this role could be her breakthrough. Heller’s direction promises to push boundaries, making “Nightbitch” one of the most talked-about films of 2024.

Rachel Morrison makes her directorial debut with a biopic about Olympic boxer Clarissa Shields. Chronicling her journey from humble beginnings in Flint, Michigan, to Olympic glory, the film stars Ryan Destiny as Shields and Brian Tyree Henry as her mentor Jason Crutchfield. Written and produced by Barry Jenkins, this heartwarming story tackles themes of triumph over adversity, pay equality in sports, and personal growth. Fans of inspirational sports dramas like “Moneyball” and “Miracle” will find much to love here.

The Coppola family brings two films to TIFF. Francis Ford Coppola’s “Metropolis” will have its Canadian premiere amid mixed reviews from Cannes. Meanwhile, Gia Coppola presents “The Last Showgirl,” featuring Pamela Anderson in her first leading role in years. Set against the fading vibrance of the Las Vegas Strip, Anderson plays Shelly, an aging showgirl contemplating her future after her show’s closure is announced. Directed by Dave Bautista, this emotional drama aims to capture the essence of a dying art form and could be Anderson’s “The Wrestler.”

“A24’s We Live in Time” directed by John Crowley is another highlight. Starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, this romance-drama follows two lovers who face a terminal illness diagnosis shortly after meeting. The film promises to be an emotional rollercoaster as they navigate their relationship and make the most of their limited time together. With elements of romance and heartbreak, this tear-jerker is set to be one of the festival’s hottest tickets.

Ron Howard’s latest historical thriller “Eden” stars Jude Law and Vanessa Kirby and dramatizes the true story of Dr. Friedrich Ritter and Dora Starch. Fleeing Germany for the Galapagos in 1940 to escape scandal and embrace nature, their utopian dreams clash with other settlers, leading to dramatic conflicts. This film promises a thrilling narrative filled with suspense and moral dilemmas.

Joseph Khan’s sci-fi horror satire “Ick” will feature in TIFF’s Midnight Madness section. Starring Brandon Ralph as a high school teacher battling an alien entity wreaking havoc on his town, this film combines highly stylized visuals with classic horror elements. Khan’s unique blend of video game and music video aesthetics makes this a must-see for genre enthusiasts.

Ralph Fiennes stars in two eagerly awaited films. “The Return” explores lesser-known chapters of Homer’s “Odyssey,” focusing on Odysseus’ life after returning from war. Co-starring Juliette Binoche, this adaptation promises romance and palace intrigue.

In “Conclave,” Fiennes portrays a voice of reason amidst the backstabbing drama of selecting a new pope. With Johnathan Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini, this Edward Berger-directed film adapts Robert Harris’s novel for an engrossing cinematic experience.

Chris Sanders’ animated feature “Wild Robot,” based on the bestselling novel, is set for its premiere at TIFF. Featuring an all-star voice cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Catherine O’Hara, Pedro Pascal, and Stephanie Hsu, the story follows Roz, an orphaned robot who must adapt to life on a wild planet while discovering her own humanity. This Dreamworks animation aims for next year’s Oscar season with its heartwarming tale.
