Despite the availability of Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos’ disaster thriller Twisters on digital streaming platforms, audiences continue to flock to theaters to experience the cinematic spectacle. Twisters, a standalone sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Twister starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, premiered in theaters on July 19. The film made its digital streaming debut via premium video on demand on August 13.

Even with Universal Pictures offering the convenience of an in-home viewing option, Twisters maintains a strong presence in theaters. Deadline reports that the film is projected to finish at No. 5 at the Labor Day weekend box office, with an estimated $8.1 million in ticket sales across 3,005 North American theaters. This will push its domestic earnings to an impressive $258.9 million.

Meanwhile, 20th Century Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to dominate the Labor Day weekend box office, with projections ranging between $19 million and $20 million in ticket sales. Should these estimates hold true, the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led superhero film will see its domestic total surpass $603 million.

Another notable release from 20th Century Studios, Alien: Romulus, is projected to secure the No. 3 position at the box office over the Labor Day weekend, garnering an estimated $11.75 million in domestic ticket sales from 3,120 theaters. If these projections are accurate, the Ridley Scott-produced sci-fi horror thriller’s domestic total will climb to $91.1 million.

Sony Pictures Entertainment’s romantic drama It Ends with Us, starring Blake Lively, is anticipated to earn $9.5 million through Labor Day. This will bring its domestic total to $135.7 million.

Additionally, Reagan, a biographical film starring Dennis Quaid as the 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan, is expected to earn $9 million during its debut over the Labor Day weekend across 2,754 North American theaters. Distributed by ShowBiz Direct, Reagan had a production budget of $25 million before considering prints and advertising costs.

Sony Pictures’ new wide release, Afraid, a horror thriller featuring John Cho and centered around artificial intelligence, is projected to earn $4 million in its debut weekend. According to Deadline, the film will likely finish at No. 8 in its four-day weekend debut and had a production budget of $12 million prior to its P&A expenditures.

Each of these films brings a unique flavor to the box office landscape, from disaster thrillers and superhero spectacles to biographical dramas and AI-driven horror, ensuring there’s something for every moviegoer this Labor Day weekend.
