DIMAPUR — The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has made a landmark decision to pay tribute to Dr. Talimeren Ao, the first captain of the Indian Olympic football team, by renaming the Junior National Girls’ Championship in his honor.
In a letter dispatched to all member associations on Wednesday, the AIFF outlined this significant development.
“We are thrilled to announce a pivotal resolution adopted during the AIFF executive committee meeting, followed by the annual general meeting held on September 10, 2024, in Hyderabad.
“It was unanimously resolved that the Junior National Girls’ Championship will henceforth be named after Late Dr. T. Ao, the trailblazing captain of the Indian Olympic football team in 1948. This renaming serves as a homage to Dr. T. Ao’s extraordinary contributions to Indian football,” the letter stated.
Dr. T. Ao, who captained India during its first foray into the Olympics at the 1948 London Games, is remembered not only for his leadership on the field but also for his influence in popularizing football across the nation. His legacy continues to inspire countless young athletes, making this dedication particularly meaningful.
The AIFF is seeking robust support and active participation from all its units to ensure the success of upcoming tournaments under this new designation. The federation believes that this initiative will serve as an enduring reminder of Dr. T. Ao’s legacy and a source of motivation for young female footballers across India.
By naming the championship after such an illustrious figure in Indian sports history, the AIFF aims to highlight the importance of recognizing past heroes while fostering future talent in women’s football.
