New Delhi: In a recent interaction with Bangladesh’s bowling coach Andre Adams, he called for patience with the emerging bowling sensation, Nahid Rana. This 21-year-old fast bowler from Chapainawabganj has captured the spotlight by consistently delivering speeds exceeding 150 kmph during the Test series against Pakistan. As the India series approaches, all eyes are on this promising talent.
Adams spoke highly of Rana’s grounded nature. “Nahid is remarkably composed and isn’t easily swayed by praise,” Adams shared with Cricbuzz. “From my experience, he’s always striving for improvement. His drive to excel is evident in his performance, and he’s been bowling exceptionally well.”
Rana’s commitment to fitness is also noteworthy. “He’s putting in significant effort to build his strength, which is crucial for young fast bowlers who generate a lot of force. He’s diligent in the gym, and since Nathan joined, the group’s overall speed and fitness have improved significantly. Nahid is clear about his goals,” Adams explained.
Highlighting Rana’s pace and technique, Adams noted, “When you have speed and a good bouncer, it’s essential to utilize them effectively. Nahid’s pace remains consistently high, which is impressive. His speed doesn’t drop, and that’s quite commendable.”
Reflecting on Rana’s performance in the first Test against Pakistan, Adams acknowledged the learning curve. “He wasn’t very accurate initially but is improving. He’s only played three Test matches; you can’t expect him to bowl like Glenn McGrath immediately. However, his progress is encouraging.”
Adams also praised Hasan Mahmud’s evolution into a red-ball prospect after being initially recognized as a white-ball talent, crediting local coaches for this transformation. “Hasan works more with local coaches than with me currently,” Adams said. “During the World Cup, we had insightful discussions with Hasan. We see him as a bowler with high potential and world-class capabilities. Transforming from a white-ball to a red-ball bowler requires hard work, and Hasan is committed to that. He’s an excellent athlete and intelligent, always aiming to improve.”
Adams addressed Taskin Ahmed’s challenges during his return to Test cricket against Pakistan after a health-related hiatus. “Managing workload is crucial for any bowler returning from injury, not just Taskin. He trains hard to prepare himself, but game conditions can be different. The first innings were challenging due to the heat and multiple spells, but we anticipated that.”
Regarding Shoriful Islam’s absence in the two-match Test series due to injury, Adams expressed optimism about his return for the T20Is. Shoriful sustained a groin injury ahead of the second Test against Pakistan and was excluded from the 16-member squad for the India tour. Currently undergoing rehabilitation, Shoriful bowled a few overs in a practice session involving potential T20 squad members.
“Every team values a left-arm pace bowler, and Shoriful has been exceptional for us,” Adams remarked. “He performed well in the first innings against Pakistan, applying pressure and swinging the ball effectively. His energy levels are impressive. He’s working hard on his fitness and strength. We would have loved to have him available for selection, but we expect him to be fit before the T20 internationals.”
