Celebrated actor Sir Ian McKellen has announced his decision to step away from acting for the remainder of the year following an unfortunate fall on stage. The 85-year-old, who has been nominated twice for an Academy Award, experienced the mishap during a fight scene in June at London’s Noel Coward Theatre, resulting in injuries to his wrist and neck.
Speaking to the Big Issue, McKellen revealed that the fall during his performance in “Player Kings” left him feeling physically weak. He is currently engaged in exercises aimed at addressing these physical issues. “Of course, it’s emotional,” he said. “We all trip throughout our lives, but as you get older, it’s harder to bounce back.”
The venerable actor, originally from Burnley, expressed his concern that his age might have contributed to the severity of his injuries, which include a chipped vertebra and a fractured wrist. “I’m trying to convince myself it was just an accident,” he added. “Normally, I’m either working or getting ready to work, but this time I’m choosing to take the rest of the year off not out of necessity, but simply because I want to.”
McKellen portrayed John Falstaff in the production, which was adapted by Robert Icke from Shakespeare’s “Henry IV,” parts one and two. He previously credited a fat suit worn during the play with protecting his ribs and other joints during the fall.
In related news, new developments are underway for a fresh series of “The Lord Of The Rings” films. The first installment, titled “The Hunt for Gollum,” will be directed by Andy Serkis, who will also reprise his role as the corrupted character Gollum, also known as Smeagol. McKellen hinted at a possible return as Gandalf, a role he immortalized in both the original trilogy and “The Hobbit” films directed by Peter Jackson.
“Enthusiasm for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ remains undiminished,” McKellen stated. “There’s a chance I might return as Gandalf.” He added, “I can’t disclose much more at this point. I’ve been informed there will be more films involving Gandalf, and they hope I’ll be part of them. When? I don’t know. What’s the script like? It’s not written yet. They better hurry.”
Apart from his acting career, Sir Ian also shared his thoughts on the ongoing US presidential election, where Vice President Kamala Harris is up against former president Donald Trump. He commented, “Though we’re not Americans, we have a right to be interested and concerned. The US president can significantly impact global affairs.”
When asked if he supports Ms. Harris, McKellen said, “There seems to be no real choice. Trump is transparently what he is, which is somewhat reassuring in its own way. Other harmful politicians often disguise their true selves; Trump’s prejudices, ignorance, incompetence, and lack of experience are all on full display.”
He also highlighted an important message emerging from Chicago: the importance of listening to each other. “Engaging in constructive arguments is fine, but we must hear each other out,” he said. “Despite significant differences, there are often many similarities that unite people.”
