Earlier this year, after the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Trump’s campaign responded aggressively. They sent a scathing cease-and-desist letter and threatened legal action against the film, which is directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman. However, since that initial outburst, no legal actions have been pursued.

In late May, attorneys from the Dhillon Law Group, representing Trump, demanded that the makers of The Apprentice prevent its viewing in the United States by May 27. They described the film, financed by Canada, Ireland, and the United States, as “a concoction of lies” that defames Trump and interferes with U.S. elections. The Virginia-based lawyers warned that failure to “immediately cease and desist from all distribution and marketing of this defamatory farce” would result in all possible legal remedies being pursued.

Despite these threats, The Apprentice is scheduled for U.S. release around October 11 through Briarcliff Entertainment, overseen by former Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg. According to insiders, it seems the Trump team has opted to ignore the situation, possibly hoping it will fade away.

This development comes as the tight race between Trump and Kamala Harris is about to enter its final stretch post-Labor Day. The biopic, featuring Sebastian Stan as a young Trump mentored by the infamous lawyer Roy Cohn (played by Jeremy Strong), has been drawing sold-out audiences at Telluride. The hollow threats from May now seem like empty bluster from the former Celebrity Apprentice host—a tactic not unfamiliar to him.

He likened it to “the illegal witch hunt of Kamala,” accusing Hollywood elites of election interference just before November. Cheung added that the film “belongs in a burning dumpster,” predicting Trump’s victory in reclaiming the White House.

With “Kamala” replacing “Biden” and “just before November” added, this statement mirrors their initial reaction from May 20 when they first threatened legal action against The Apprentice filmmakers.
