Anwar Ali Cleared to Play for East Bengal after Delhi High Court Intervention

Kolkata, Sep 19 (PTI) – In a significant development for Indian football, defender Anwar Ali has been granted clearance to play for East Bengal. This comes after the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Players Status Committee issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) on Thursday, following a directive from the Delhi High Court that called for a rehearing of his case, thereby overturning a previous suspension imposed by the AIFF.

The Delhi High Court’s intervention was pivotal in this matter. The court criticized the AIFF for not adhering to principles of natural justice and for failing to provide Anwar a fair opportunity to present his case. Highlighting the lack of reasoning in the federation’s decision, the court mandated a reconsideration of the ruling.

On September 10, the AIFF had initially imposed a four-month suspension on Anwar Ali. The federation accused him of unjustly terminating his contract with Mohun Bagan and sought compensation amounting to Rs 12.90 crore. This hefty compensation was directed not only at Anwar but also at his parent club, Delhi FC, and East Bengal, where he had recently signed a five-year contract.

The Players Status Committee, while granting the NOC, emphasized that Anwar’s subsequent conduct of signing with East Bengal FC should be recognized. According to Article 9.5, the committee updated the Central Registration System (CRS) to reflect this order as the necessary release letter/NOC.

With this clearance, Anwar Ali is now officially eligible to join East Bengal and participate in the ongoing Indian Super League. He will be available for East Bengal’s upcoming match against Kerala Blasters on September 22, as well as the eagerly awaited Kolkata Derby against Mohun Bagan on October 19.

This decision not only marks a significant win for Anwar but also sets a precedent in Indian football governance, ensuring that players’ rights are protected and due process is followed.

In related sports news, Indian cricketer Ravi Ashwin recently opened up about his aggressive approach during the first Test match against Bangladesh in 2024, drawing parallels with Rishabh Pant’s playing style. Additionally, Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud joined the ranks of legendary bowler Dale Steyn by achieving a rare feat during the same match.

The next hearing concerning Anwar Ali’s case is scheduled for September 30, where further deliberations will take place. This ongoing legal battle continues to be closely watched by the football community, as it underscores critical issues related to player contracts and federations’ decision-making processes.
