New Delhi: In a closely contested match against Odisha FC, Punjab FC showcased superior finishing skills to secure a 2-1 victory in their first home game of the new Indian Super League season at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
With this win, Punjab FC has not only matched Bengaluru FC with back-to-back victories but also established themselves as early frontrunners in the league. The positive start under new coach Panagiotis Dlimperis is further highlighted by the impressive performances of home-grown talents Nihal Sudeesh and Leon Augustine, who were the goal scorers for Punjab.
Despite Hugo Boumous managing to score in added time for Odisha, the team couldn’t recover from their poor start, now suffering two consecutive defeats. Odisha FC’s coach, Sergio Lobera, faces a significant challenge to turn things around quickly to avoid further setbacks in the season. However, it’s still early days, and there’s no need for panic just yet.
Conversely, Dlimperis must ensure his team stays grounded despite their strong start. The absence of injured striker Luka Majcen means that Punjab relies heavily on players like Nihal and substitute Leon to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Their goals in the 27th and 89th minutes were a testament to their clinical finishing, both placing the ball neatly in the far corner after being set up in the box.
Odisha FC did have their chances throughout the match. However, Boumous and substitute Rahim Ali failed to convert crucial opportunities. Rahim Ali and Ahmed Jahouh were introduced at the start of the second half to inject some offensive energy, but they struggled to find the target.
In a dramatic moment during added time, Boumous’s shot fortuitously found its way into the net after deflecting off Punjab keeper Ravi Kumar’s back and hitting the post. Though Punjab might have preferred a clean sheet, securing three points was paramount.
Punjab FC’s victory at their adopted home ground in New Delhi sets a promising tone for their season, while Odisha FC must regroup and strategize to earn their first points in the upcoming matches.
