Hyderabad: During the vibrant Ganesh Chaturthi festivities in Hyderabad, the Telangana Police SHE teams took significant action by arresting 966 individuals for offenses related to violating women’s modesty. These arrests were predominantly made in areas such as Bada Ganesh and Khairtatabad, which are known for drawing large crowds.
Khairtabad Bada Ganesh is renowned for its towering 70-foot idol of the deity Ganesh, a monumental figure that attracts thousands of devotees and visitors from every corner of the city annually. This year, the idol was ceremoniously immersed into Hussain Sagar Lake on the 11th and final day of the festival, which fell on Tuesday, September 17.
The vigilant Hyderabad SHE teams have been actively monitoring these crowded locations to prevent and respond to instances of harassment and misconduct towards women. To bolster security during the festival, SHE teams employed various surveillance techniques, including extensive video recording, to gather evidence and facilitate the apprehension of offenders.
According to police reports, most offenders faced charges under section 70(c) of the City Police Act and section 292 of the Indian Penal Code. These individuals are set to be presented in court for further legal proceedings. In cases where video evidence was insufficient or unavailable, the offenders were given stern warnings and counselled in the presence of their family members to underscore the seriousness of their actions.
The Hyderabad SHE teams are proactive in urging women to report any instances of eve teasing or harassment they experience or observe. Women can easily file complaints with the SHE teams by dialing 100 or through the official WhatsApp number, 9490616555.
By maintaining a strong presence and encouraging community vigilance, Hyderabad SHE teams aim to create a safer environment for women during public events and daily life.
