Despite previously expressing doubts about returning to the Harry Potter franchise, Oscar-nominated actress and The Crown star Imelda Staunton will indeed reprise her infamous role as Dolores Umbridge. This comeback is part of Universal Epic Universe’s new Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic attraction, inspired by the beloved film series.
Fourteen years after her last appearance as Umbridge in 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, an official franchise YouTube video has confirmed Staunton’s return. She has filmed new scenes as the villainous character, who is set to be the focal point of the upcoming Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry ride. This attraction will immerse guests in a journey through the British Ministry of Magic during Umbridge’s trial. Visitors entering Universal Orlando Resort’s next theme park (scheduled to open in 2025) will step into the grand atrium of the Ministry, as seen in the Harry Potter movies. However, the trial takes a chaotic turn when Umbridge attempts a daring escape, wreaking havoc on her captors.
Hope Glomski of Universal Global Themed Entertainment revealed in a video clip that guests will explore never-before-seen locations within the Ministry, such as the Ministry of Archives and the Department of Magical Creatures. The ride will also feature beloved characters from the film series, including Corban Yaxley, Walden Macnair, the Carrow family, and Kingsley Shacklebolt, along with introducing a new house elf character named Higgledy.
Assistant Director Anisha Vyas Burgos praised Staunton’s performance as “absolutely brilliant,” with behind-the-scenes footage showing the 68-year-old actress filming her scenes in front of a large green screen. “She got to take Umbridge to the extreme,” Burgos added.
In a 2019 interview with Hello! magazine, Staunton mentioned she didn’t foresee returning to the Harry Potter franchise after her two-film stint that began with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007. Despite this, she shared that she still enjoys playfully scaring fans who recognize her as the nefarious former Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. “Of course I can scare people. I don’t get a lot of kids coming up to me actually. It’s the grown-up kids — you want to say you are 35 — but they grew up with it,” Staunton remarked. “Harry Potter doesn’t stop, does it?”

Staunton’s return to the Harry Potter universe follows EW’s exclusive report that Eddie Redmayne, star of the three Fantastic Beasts films, will reprise his role as Newt Scamander within the new Epic Universe land as well.
The new Harry Potter land promises a unique fusion of timelines from both the eight main Harry Potter films and the three Fantastic Beasts movies. This expansive area will span from 1920s Paris to 1990s London. Universal visitors will be able to traverse between these worlds using the Métro Floo transportation network, offering fans an immersive experience with the Floo Network.
While Redmayne and Staunton are confirmed to return, there has been no formal announcement regarding the involvement of other iconic characters such as Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint), and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson). However, images of these actors did appear in Universal Epic Universe’s latest press release promoting the Harry Potter land. (EW has reached out to representatives for these stars.)
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic is slated to open with Epic Universe in 2025. Watch Staunton reprise her role as Umbridge in the video above.
