In an electrifying start to the Legends League Cricket (LLC) at Barkatullah Stadium in Jodhpur, Konark Suryas Odisha, led by skipper Irfan Pathan, clinched a nail-biting 2-run victory over the defending champions Manipal Tigers on Friday evening. Despite being new entrants in the tournament, Konark Suryas demonstrated impressive skill and strategy.

Konark Suryas, making their debut in the LLC, posted a modest score of 104/9 in their allotted 20 overs. While this total seemed underwhelming, the team’s bowling and fielding efforts turned the tide. The defending champions, Manipal Tigers, were restricted to 102/8, falling short by just two runs in a thrilling contest.

Irfan Pathan, a former Team India all-rounder, played a crucial role in inspiring his team to defend the low total. Speaking to the media post-match, Irfan shared his strategy during the innings break. “I told my team that the pitch was on the slower side, so we needed to capitalize on the powerplay by taking early wickets. A poor new-ball spell could have cost us the game right there,” he explained.

The captain highlighted an extraordinary bowling performance, noting that the bowlers did not concede a single boundary for 13 consecutive overs. This remarkable discipline and control were pivotal in creating pressure on the Manipal Tigers’ batting lineup.

In an intense final over, with Manipal Tigers requiring 13 runs to win, Irfan decided to bowl himself despite not having bowled earlier in the innings. This tactical move proved successful as he conceded only 10 runs and took a crucial wicket, securing a last-ball victory for his team. “I didn’t have any other option apart from Dilshan Munaweera. I mostly bowled cutters except for one quick ball and let the batters take risks for boundaries,” Irfan detailed.

Irfan also acknowledged Vinay Kumar’s significant contributions both with the bat and ball. Vinay had earlier scored vital runs and claimed two wickets. Additionally, his timely advice before the last ball was instrumental. “Vinay pointed out that Ben Laughlin was fatigued due to jetlag, so I swapped him with Ambati Rayudu at the boundary ropes,” Irfan revealed. He further lauded his bowlers for maintaining tight lines and not allowing a single boundary for 13 overs.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by retired cricketers returning to competitive cricket, Irfan admitted it was tough to meet supporters’ expectations. “We’re now part-time cricketers, and it’s hard to get back into rhythm. Nonetheless, it was an exceptional game for us,” he concluded.

Looking ahead, Konark Suryas Odisha will face Manipal Tigers again on September 26 at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium in Surat, hoping to replicate their winning performance.
