The 2024 Homeless World Cup has made a historic debut in Seoul, South Korea, the first time this global event has been held in Asia. Since its inception in 2003, the Homeless World Cup has aimed to empower individuals experiencing homelessness through the transformative power of football, while also challenging societal stereotypes.

This year’s tournament is a grand spectacle featuring 52 teams from 38 countries, all converging on the main pitch at Seoul’s Hanyang University. The event marks a significant milestone as it is the first edition since the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) signed an agreement in August to partner with the Homeless World Cup Foundation. This partnership is a testament to FIFA’s belief in the positive impact of football. “FIFA is excited to contribute, because we share the view of the Homeless World Cup Foundation that football is a force for good,” said FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Instagram.

As part of this collaboration, FIFA is providing medals and trophies for the participants and broadcasting the event on its streaming platform, FIFA+. This new level of exposure aims to bring greater attention to the cause and inspire more people worldwide.

One of the key local organizers, The Big Issue Korea, emphasized that the tournament seeks to raise awareness about housing rights among Seoul residents. “We hope this event will broaden the scope of policies related to homelessness in South Korea and address the lack of mandatory support measures,” said Ahn Byung-hun, the executive director.

The South Korean team embodies diversity and resilience, comprising eight players from varied backgrounds, including an individual with disabilities, an asylum seeker, and a teenager living in a shelter. This eclectic mix highlights the universal challenges of homelessness and the inclusive spirit of the tournament.

Open to the public free of charge, the event runs until September 28th, inviting everyone to witness the unifying power of football and support a cause that transcends borders and backgrounds.
