Bangladesh’s All-Rounder Struggles with Finger and Shoulder Injuries

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 21 (ANI): Former Indian spinner Murali Karthik disclosed on Saturday that Bangladesh’s all-rounder, who has been out of form, is experiencing significant discomfort in his spinning finger and shoulder. This revelation comes as the player struggles to find his rhythm on the field.

The all-rounder, whose name has not been specified, bowled seven overs on the third day of the match after skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto brought him into the attack. Unfortunately, his performance was subpar, as he was hit for six fours and two sixes by Rishabh Pant during his spell. This year has been particularly challenging for the seasoned player. Across 18 innings in all formats, he has managed to score only 295 runs at an average of 19.66, with just one half-century to his name. His bowling statistics are equally concerning, having taken only 18 wickets at an average of 39.88, with his best figures being 4/35.

Karthik, who was handling broadcasting duties for the match, mentioned to ESPNCricinfo that the player has undergone surgery on his bowling finger. “Having observed him and known him for a long time, I approached him to understand why he hasn’t been bowling much. He explained that he had finger surgery on his bowling finger—the index finger of his left hand. It’s swollen, rigid, and lacks movement and suppleness. As a spinner, you need to feel the ball in your fingers, and he’s missing that feeling. Additionally, he’s having shoulder issues, making it incredibly tough to bowl in Test cricket where tactile feedback is crucial,” said Karthik.

Shakib Al Hasan faced an injury to his left index finger during a match against Sri Lanka in the 50-over World Cup last year, which sidelined him for several months. Compounding his woes, an eye problem delayed his return to the national team until March this year.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal pointed out that if Bangladesh chose to play Shakib despite his injuries, they are effectively fielding one bowler short. “Murali Karthik mentioned that Shakib is struggling to grip the ball due to this finger injury. If that’s the case, Bangladesh is operating with only four frontline bowlers. The team management needs to clarify whether they were aware of this injury,” said Tamim.

In contrast, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief physician Dr. Debashish refuted claims of any current discomfort for Shakib due to an injury. “Shakib had a fracture in his finger from the World Cup in India and had an infection from another finger injury a few years ago. However, Shakib hasn’t recently reported any issues related to his finger or shoulder. A previously broken finger can indeed cause discomfort,” concluded Dr. Debashish.

This unfolding situation leaves fans and analysts speculating about the future performance and fitness of one of Bangladesh’s key players as they navigate their cricketing challenges.
