Clooney Denies $35M Earnings for ‘Wolfs’; Film Premieres to Ovation at Venice Festival

George Clooney recently set the record straight about his and Brad Pitt’s earnings for their roles in Jon Watts’ new action comedy, Wolfs. During a press conference at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, Clooney addressed the misconception that he and Pitt each pocketed $35 million for their participation in the film. Clooney refuted the figure, emphasizing its inaccuracy and its potential negative impact on the industry. He referenced Nicole Sperling’s article in The New York Times, stating, “Whatever her source was for our salary, it is millions and millions and millions of dollars less than what was reported. I am only saying that because I think it’s bad for our industry if that’s what people think is the standard-bearer for salaries. I think that’s terrible. It’ll make it impossible to make films.”

The confusion originated from Sperling’s August 25 article titled “Apple Rethinks Its Movie Strategy After a String of Misses,” which suggested that both actors received $35 million each for Wolfs. The film, set for a one-week theatrical release on September 20, 2024, before streaming on Apple TV+ a week later, reunites Clooney and Pitt on screen after nearly fifteen years. Directed by Jon Watts, Wolfs is an action-thriller that follows two fixers brought together for the same job.

Despite the salary controversy, Clooney and Pitt are evidently proud of their work on Wolfs. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival to a five-minute standing ovation, during which the actors shared a heartfelt hug. Brad Pitt elaborated on their reunion, saying, “We kind of figured there’s gotta be a good reason to get back in a film together—something we feel like we could build upon what we’ve done before. But also, I gotta say, as I get older, working with the people that I just really enjoy spending time with has really become important to me.”

MovieWeb’s review of Wolfs noted that “George Clooney & Brad Pitt reunite for a tired crime thriller throwback.” At the film’s press conference in Italy, Clooney also discussed the limited theatrical release, expressing disappointment but optimism. “Yes, we wanted it to be released [theatrically], we’ve had some bumps along the way, that happens. There are elements of this that we are figuring out. It is a bummer, of course it’s a bummer. On the other hand, a lot of people are going to see the film, and we are getting a release in a few hundred theaters. But, yeah, it would have been nicer to have a wide release.”

Brad Pitt also commented on his career trajectory during this period, noting that at 60 years old, he has no intention of slowing down. As both an actor and producer, he continues to be highly active in the industry.

Wolfs will have its one-week theatrical run starting September 20 before becoming available for streaming on Apple TV+ on September 27. Fans can also catch a glimpse of Clooney and Pitt celebrating their film’s success with a joyful dance during its ovation at the Venice Film Festival.
