Adil Rashid Aims for 2027 ODI World Cup, Becomes First English Spinner with 200 ODI Wickets

NEW DELHI: Adil Rashid, the seasoned spinner from England, has etched his name in the annals of cricket history by becoming the first English spinner to claim 200 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs). This remarkable achievement came during the second ODI against Australia, underscoring Rashid’s prowess and consistency on the international stage.

At 36, Rashid has no intentions of hanging up his boots anytime soon. He has set his sights on continuing his cricketing journey until the 2027 ODI World Cup. This ambitious goal reflects his commitment and passion for the sport, ensuring that he remains a cornerstone of England’s white-ball team during a significant period of transition.

The England cricket team is currently navigating through a challenging phase. With captain Jos Buttler sidelined due to injury, young Harry Brook has taken up the mantle of leadership. Interim coach Marcus Trescothick is temporarily overseeing the squad, but further changes are on the horizon. Brendon McCullum is poised to take on the white-ball coaching role in addition to his existing responsibilities as the Test coach, bringing a fresh perspective to the team’s strategy.

Despite these shifts, Adil Rashid’s importance cannot be overstated. His central contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) extends until the end of 2025, ensuring his presence in upcoming key tournaments like the Champions Trophy next year, the 2026 T20 World Cup, and the 2027 50-over World Cup. Rashid aims to be an integral part of England’s resurgence and strategic planning moving forward.

England currently faces an uphill battle in their ongoing five-match series against Australia, trailing 2-0. Their most recent performance saw them being bowled out for 202 runs while chasing a target of 271, marking their 10th defeat in the last 14 ODIs. Another loss would seal a series defeat, adding pressure on the team to bounce back.

In a candid interview with ESPNCricinfo ahead of the third ODI at Chester-Le-Street, Rashid opened up about his thoughts and future plans. He reflected on his close friendship and partnership with Moeen Ali, who recently retired from international cricket. Rashid is set to play his 138th ODI, matching Moeen’s career tally, and acknowledges the void left by his friend’s departure.

Moeen’s absence has propelled Rashid into a mentorship role for emerging spinners like Rehan Ahmed. Rashid has already been instrumental in guiding several young talents in county cricket, including Rehan and Jafer Chohan. His experience and knowledge are invaluable assets as he helps shape the next generation of English spinners.

“He [Moeen] is a big miss for the team and for me personally because we are really good friends on and off the pitch. He has made his decision to move on to another chapter of his life and career, and I am confident he will excel,” Rashid remarked.

“With Mo not around, I find myself taking on more responsibility, especially in mentoring the youngsters who seek my guidance.”

“My ultimate aim is to pass on whatever experience I have—whether it’s mindset or technical skills—to the younger players I work with,” Rashid added. “I’ve worked closely with Rehan Ahmed and Jafer [Chohan] at Yorkshire. There’s healthy competition among these players, and they have the potential to become top-tier spinners.”

Rashid also addressed speculation about his retirement, emphasizing that he remains focused on enjoying the game and contributing to his team’s success.

“I haven’t thought about retirement yet. My goal is to keep playing, stay fit, bowl well, and contribute to our victories in World Cups and Champions Trophies,” he said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo via ANI.

“I take each game and series as they come. As long as I’m enjoying it and performing well, I’ll continue. To have played for this long and taken so many wickets is something I never dreamt of. It’s been an enjoyable journey with its ups and downs, and I hope to stay on an upward trajectory for the rest of my career.”

“I have no immediate plans for retirement; it hasn’t even crossed my mind. It’s all about enjoying the game and giving it everything I’ve got.”

The return of Joe Root and Ben Stokes to the white-ball squad ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy is highly anticipated. The team’s recent loss of Moeen Ali is significant, but Rashid’s journey from playing 76 out of 81 ODIs between the 2015 and 2019 World Cups under Eoin Morgan’s leadership highlights his resilience and contribution to England’s rise as a formidable white-ball team.

As England seeks to recover from recent disappointments in both 50-over and T20 World Cups, Adil Rashid remains a vital player. His experience and wisdom are crucial for guiding the team towards future success.
