NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Apex Council is scheduled to convene on Wednesday to deliberate on a range of administrative matters crucial to the organization’s operations. Notably, this meeting will not cover the selection of a new secretary to replace Jay Shah, who has been appointed as the next ICC Chairman.
Key topics on the agenda include resolving the sponsorship complications with Byju’s and planning the development of a new National Cricket Academy (NCA). Byju’s, an educational technology firm, terminated its jersey sponsorship with the BCCI in March of the previous year. Initially, the company had signed a three-year agreement in 2019, which was later extended by one year, amounting to approximately USD 55 million. Despite payments being made until September 2022, issues regarding unpaid dues from October 2022 to March 2023 have surfaced, necessitating immediate attention.
Moreover, discussions will encompass the establishment of a cutting-edge National Cricket Academy on the outskirts of Bengaluru. Presently, the NCA functions from within the M Chinnaswamy Stadium premises, where it has been based for over twenty years. The new facility is anticipated to significantly advance the training and development of cricket talent across the nation, fostering a new generation of athletes.
Another critical point on the council’s docket is approving the renovation of the exterior of the BCCI headquarters located in Mumbai. This project aims to modernize and enhance the infrastructure to better support the organization’s growing needs. Additionally, there will be a review of the North East development project, which focuses on nurturing cricket talent and infrastructure in that region.
Although Jay Shah has been unanimously selected as the next ICC Chairman, he will not step down from his current role as BCCI Secretary during the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM). Shah is expected to commence his duties as ICC Chairman on December 1. The search for his successor as BCCI Secretary remains an important future task for the organization.
This session is particularly significant as it represents the final gathering of the Apex Council before the Board’s 93rd Annual General Meeting, scheduled to be held in Bengaluru in five days.
