West Indies head coach Daren Sammy did not hold back when talking about Alzarri Joseph’s behavior during the third ODI against England, calling it “unacceptable” and urging a quick discussion on the matter. Joseph’s frustration became obvious in the fourth over when he looked upset about a fielding decision made by captain Shai Hope.
Even though Joseph took the wicket of Jordan Cox on the fourth ball, he didn’t celebrate. Instead, he turned his back and walked off after exchanging heated words with Hope. He showed clear signs of frustration and disagreement. To make matters worse, Joseph left the field without telling anyone at the end of the over, leaving his team one player short for the next over.
Sammy was not happy with Joseph’s actions and spoke about it after the game. He told TalkSPORT: “That kind of behavior is not okay on my cricket field. We’re friends, but I’m building a culture here, and that doesn’t fit. We will definitely talk about it.”
Joseph’s unexpected exits from the field continued to disrupt his role in the match. After leaving in the fourth over, he came back in the sixth but didn’t bowl until the 12th over. When he did bowl again, two misfields on his deliveries allowed England to score extra runs through overthrows. After that, Joseph left the field once more.
Despite all the interruptions, Joseph completed his 10 overs and finished with figures of 2 for 45, taking the wickets of Cox and Dan Mousley.
Sammy has been working hard to bring discipline and commitment to the West Indies team. His leadership has also helped bring back important players like Andre Russell and Evin Lewis. Speaking about his approach to managing the team, Sammy said, “I don’t shy away from tough conversations, but I make sure everyone knows what needs to be done. When I see improvement, it makes me proud.”
Building a strong team culture is very important to Sammy, but he admitted there is still more work ahead.
The West Indies won the ODI series 2-1, setting a positive tone for their upcoming five-match T20 series. Sammy hinted that fans could see some familiar players return to the squad, including Nicholas Pooran and Akeal Hosein, who missed the recent series against Sri Lanka.
