The Philadelphia 76ers are struggling with a terrible start to the season, holding a 2-11 record. Things got even more heated after their fourth straight loss, this time to the Miami Heat on Monday night. Following the defeat, Tyrese Maxey, one of the team’s key players, called out former MVP Joel Embiid for not showing up on time and how it’s affecting the whole team, from the locker room to the coaching staff.
This poor start has tied the Sixers with the Washington Wizards for the worst record in the league. After the loss, veteran guard Kyle Lowry suggested a team meeting to clear the air and get everyone back on track. The meeting included some honest conversations and a call for more effort and urgency.
Maxey, who won the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award last season, took this opportunity to address Embiid directly. He pointed out that Embiid being late was causing problems for everyone. Although Maxey and Embiid are close and have always been open with each other, this issue needed to be addressed. Embiid accepted Maxey’s criticism but also mentioned he’s sometimes unsure about how the team is trying to play on the court.
During the meeting, players told head coach Nick Nurse that they want more tough coaching. On the other hand, the coaching staff emphasized that players need to practice with more focus and attention to detail. So far this season, the Sixers rank last in the NBA in points per game and shooting percentage.
Embiid has had a rough start to the season. He’s only played three games due to managing a left knee injury and serving a suspension after an altercation with a local columnist. His current stats are well below his usual standard—14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.
Injuries have been an issue for other key players too. Paul George, who was the team’s big free-agent signing, missed games early on due to a bone bruise. He’s averaging 16.7 points while shooting just 28.8% from three-point range over seven games. He managed 18 points in Monday’s loss but struggled from deep, hitting only 1 of 7 three-pointers.
Maxey himself has been sidelined since November 7 with a hamstring strain but is expected to return soon, possibly as early as Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies or Friday against the Brooklyn Nets.
One bright spot for the Sixers has been rookie guard Jared McCain. The young player from Duke University has shown promise, averaging 15.2 points per game and shooting 40.8% from three in his first 13 games.
Despite all these setbacks and their tough start to the season, there’s no indication that head coach Nick Nurse or team president Daryl Morey are in danger of losing their jobs amid the team’s struggles and locker room tensions.
