Sanju Samson’s Century Leads India to Victory in T20 Opener

Sanju Samson has firmly secured his spot in the Indian cricket team after scoring a brilliant century in the first match of the four-game T20 series against South Africa. With this remarkable performance, Sanju has become only the fourth player in international cricket history to score centuries in back-to-back T20 International matches. Prior to this series, India played a T20 series against Bangladesh, where Sanju also made headlines by hitting a century in the final game. In the match against South Africa, held in Durban, Sanju’s outstanding knock of 107 runs helped India post a strong total of 202 runs. India went on to win the match comfortably by 61 runs.

Sanju was named Player of the Match for his century, and during the post-match presentation, he shared his thoughts on the innings. He expressed how he focused on enjoying every moment on the field and making the most of his current form. He explained that his game plan was to remain aggressive and keep pushing the team forward. “Once you get a few balls under your belt, you start looking for boundaries,” he said. Sanju also mentioned that he doesn’t overthink while batting because sometimes things go your way, and sometimes they don’t. He was simply glad that everything fell into place for him during the match. Beating South Africa on their home turf is no easy feat, but Sanju felt proud that India started the series with such a strong performance.

In his innings of 107 runs, Sanju smashed 10 sixes, making him the third player—and the first Indian—to hit 10 or more sixes in a T20 International match in South Africa. Before him, West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle achieved this milestone back in 2007 in Johannesburg, and more recently, Johnson Charles also did so in Centurion in 2023.
