Adam Zampa played a key role in preventing Australia from facing an even more humiliating defeat against Pakistan in the second ODI on Friday. He also managed to cleverly trick Pakistan into wasting a critical review towards the end of Australia’s innings.
Australia, the reigning World Cup champions, were thoroughly outplayed by Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval, suffering one of their worst losses in ODI history. After managing to score only 163 runs, Australia struggled in the field as Pakistan’s openers, Saim Ayub (82) and Abdullah Shafique (64 not out), made quick work of the target. The visitors cruised to a nine-wicket win with a massive 141 balls still remaining.
This marks the first time since 1992 that Australia has lost a home ODI by nine wickets. However, Zampa’s late breakthrough dismissed Ayub and spared Australia from the embarrassment of losing by 10 wickets.
“It wasn’t our best day,” admitted Australian captain Pat Cummins. “We’ve been doing well recently, but today was one of our worst performances, unfortunately.”
One lighthearted moment stood out during Australia’s collapse. Zampa, who had been working hard with the bat after a middle-order collapse, convinced Pakistan’s wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan to burn one of their reviews. During a big swing from Zampa when Australia was struggling at 9-153, Rizwan appealed for a caught-behind decision. After the umpire showed no interest, Rizwan asked Zampa if he should use the review.
Rizwan: “Did you hear something?”
Zampa: “You’re appealing for everything.”
Rizwan: “Should I take the review?”
Zampa: “Yeah, you should. You should take it.”
Pakistan went ahead with the review, much to the amusement of commentators and viewers alike, only for the result to come back as ‘not out.’
Pakistan’s dominant win gives them a great chance to take the three-match series. The final game will be played in Perth on Sunday, but several key Australian players—Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Steve Smith, and Marnus Labuschagne—will not make the trip as they prepare for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India.
With Cummins sitting out, Josh Inglis will step in as captain for the first time. He’ll be joined by Glenn Maxwell and Zampa as some of the few players from last year’s World Cup final squad to feature at Optus Stadium for the series decider.
