Jorgensen’s Last-Minute Try Seals Wallabies Win at Twickenham

Max Jorgensen has made his mark on Australian rugby history after scoring the game-winning try in the 84th minute, securing a dramatic win over England at Twickenham. This victory is Australia’s first at the iconic stadium since the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

However, all eyes were on Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, a debutant for the Wallabies who switched from rugby league to union. Suaalii’s performance was electric, drawing comparisons to former star Israel Folau with his impressive aerial skills and numerous offloads. In his first match for Australia, the 21-year-old quickly became a fan favorite and a player to watch for his ability to win restarts and create opportunities through his ball handling. Suaalii’s play early in the game helped set up a try by fullback Tom Wright, which sparked Australia’s comeback.

Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt praised Suaalii after the match, noting how well he paired with teammate Lenny Ikitau. Schmidt emphasized how Suaalii’s athleticism in the air gave Australia an edge and how it was a great learning experience for the young player.

While Suaalii shone in the first half, it was the overall team effort that sealed the victory. Tom Wright was once again dangerous with every touch of the ball, constantly threatening England’s defense. Wright, along with wings Andrew Kellaway and Dylan Pietsch, moved the ball quickly from Australia’s 22 into England’s territory. Ikitau was instrumental too, especially when his offload in the final minutes set up Jorgensen’s winning try.

Replacement halfback Tate McDermott also made an impact off the bench, assisting a Harry Wilson try in the 34th minute and adding speed around the ruck in the final stages of the game. The Wallabies’ forward pack was equally crucial, with Rob Valetini powering through defenders and Angus Bell standing out in both attack and defense. Fraser McReight’s tireless work at the breakdown helped maintain control during critical moments.

Despite their strong performance, England, led by Marcus Smith, made a late push in the final 10 minutes. The Wallabies looked like they might lose yet another close game after Maro Itoje scored to give England the lead. But an error by Itoje at the restart provided Australia with one last chance. The Wallabies kept possession from a scrum and worked their way forward. Ikitau broke through England’s defense and offloaded to Jorgensen, who sprinted down the right wing to score the winning try.

Coach Joe Schmidt highlighted the team’s resilience and praised players like Ikitau and Max Jorgensen for their game-winning efforts. Schmidt also pointed out that despite being up and down throughout the match, the Wallabies’ effort remained constant, leading to their historic win.

This match will go down as one of the most thrilling in recent rugby history, featuring 10 tries—five from each team—and several lead changes in the final minutes. The Wallabies showed grit and determination that had been missing earlier in the year, keeping their hopes for a Grand Slam alive with this unforgettable victory.
