Last year, many fans were pretty upset when Rockstar decided to bring the 2010 classic *Red Dead Redemption* to the Nintendo Switch and PS4. They didn’t really add anything new to the game, priced it at $50, and once again ignored PC gamers who’ve been waiting over a decade for it. When news came out that *Red Dead Redemption* was finally coming to Steam on October 29, there was a brief moment of excitement—until we saw the price tag.
It’s no shocker that the Steam version is priced the same as last year’s PS4/Switch release, but it’s still disappointing. It feels like Rockstar is saying their games are so valuable that not only are they worth waiting 14 years for, but they also should cost almost as much as a brand-new AAA game. Last year, after people complained about the price, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said the cost was “commercially accurate” and even claimed that bundling the game with its *Undead Nightmare* expansion was “a great value for consumers.”
But if you compare this price to other similar games from 2010, it doesn’t look so great. Classic games like *Bayonetta*, *Arkham City*, *Alpha Protocol*, and *Mass Effect 2* (as part of the $60 *Legendary Edition*) are all priced around $20. That’s less than half of what Rockstar is asking for *Red Dead Redemption*. Sure, the PC version of *RDR* has some nice upgrades like ultrawide support, HDR, DLSS, and high refresh rate support—but honestly, these are the basics we expect from any modern port. We’ve criticized other re-releases, like the *Metal Gear Master Collection*, for lacking these features at launch.
So is *Red Dead Redemption* really worth twice as much as games like *Mass Effect 2* or *Bayonetta*? Personally, I’m not thrilled about paying $50 for a 14-year-old game. There are plenty of better ways to spend that money on Steam. And I don’t appreciate being told that this port—which should’ve been released on PC years ago—is somehow a “great value.” It’s a frustrating reminder of Rockstar’s attitude toward PC gamers, especially when we’re likely facing another long wait after *Grand Theft Auto 6* arrives on consoles first.
