Xbox is getting ready to launch its own mobile store, which will let players buy Xbox games directly from an app on their phones.
This big change comes after Epic Games had a legal battle with Google. A federal judge has decided that Google must open up the Play Store to allow other stores to exist on its platform. This means apps like the Xbox app or the Epic Games Store can not only be listed on Google Play but also sell games directly to users without using Google’s payment system.
Sarah Bond, Xbox’s President, confirmed that starting in November, the Xbox app will become a mobile store where users can purchase and play Xbox games:
“The court’s ruling to open up Google’s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility. Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices, so we are thrilled to share that starting in November, players will be able to buy and play Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android,” Bond posted on social media.
This announcement comes at a critical time for Microsoft and Xbox. Back in July 2023, Microsoft finalized its $70 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard King. One of the main reasons for this deal was mobile gaming since mobile games were generating more money than consoles and PCs for certain periods.
With popular mobile titles like Call of Duty Mobile, Candy Crush, and Diablo Immortal under its belt, Xbox can now combine these mobile hits with games it already owns, like Minecraft.
Originally, Microsoft had plans to create a separate Xbox mobile store. But now, thanks to the recent legal ruling, it looks like they’ll simply integrate this mobile store into the existing Xbox app on Android, possibly with a dedicated section or sidebar for mobile games.
