At just 13 years and 187 days old, Suryavanshi has made history by breaking a long-standing record. He surpassed Bangladesh’s Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who previously held the record for being the youngest to score a century at the youth level at 14 years and 241 days.
During the IPL auction, the Delhi Capitals showed interest in Suryavanshi, starting the bidding at his base price of $35,500. However, it was the Rajasthan Royals who secured the young talent. Rajasthan’s CEO, Jake Lush McCrum, shared his excitement about the acquisition. “He’s been to our high-performance center in Nagpur, and he impressed everyone during trials. He’s an incredible young talent, and we’re confident he can rise to the challenge of IPL cricket,” McCrum said after the auction concluded.
McCrum further praised Suryavanshi, calling him “a hell of a talent.” The team is committed to supporting his development in the months leading up to the IPL season, which begins on March 14. With former Indian captain Rahul Dravid as part of Rajasthan’s coaching panel, Suryavanshi is expected to gain valuable guidance.
The young cricketer looks up to legendary West Indian batter Brian Lara and often seeks advice from Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian player. Jaffer and Suryavanshi crossed paths during an under-19 tournament in Bangladesh last year, and Jaffer has since offered him useful tips.
Suryavanshi’s journey in cricket began under the watchful eye of his father and coach, Sanjiv. Recognizing his son’s interest and talent at a young age, Sanjiv has been instrumental in shaping his cricket career. “He’s not just my son anymore; he’s Bihar’s son,” Sanjiv proudly stated. “My son has worked incredibly hard to reach this point.”
Interestingly, while there’s no formal age limit for IPL players, international cricket rules set a minimum age of 15. However, exceptions can be made with special permission from cricket boards. Suryavanshi has shown that age is just a number when it comes to talent.
In IPL history, Prayas Ray Barman held the record as the youngest player to secure an IPL contract at age 16 in 2019. However, after playing one match for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Barman faded from the spotlight. In international cricket, Pakistani batter Hasan Raza still holds the record as the youngest cricketer to make a Test debut, achieving this milestone at 14 years and 227 days back in 1996.
Suryavanshi’s rise is inspiring, and all eyes will be on him as he prepares to step onto one of cricket’s biggest stages.
