Spinner Tom Beasley and fast bowler Ben Harcombe teamed up to secure a strong win for Anglesea against Drysdale in Round 6 of the BPCA A1 Grade cricket competition. With this victory, Anglesea remains the only unbeaten team in the league after Armstrong Creek upset Barwon Heads. According to Beasley, there’s a fantastic atmosphere at Ellimatta Reserve as the team continues its winning streak.
On Saturday, Queenscliff faced a daunting target of 340 runs but was bowled out for just 126. Beasley delivered an impressive spell, taking 4 wickets for 43 runs in 19 overs, while Harcombe dominated with figures of 4/14 from 11 overs.
Beasley expressed his satisfaction with the team’s all-round performance. “We were really happy with how things went,” he said. “Everyone contributed, whether it was with the bat, ball, or in the field. It was one of those games where everything clicked, and it feels great to get a win like that.”
Harcombe earned special praise for his resilience and bowling effort. “He didn’t have the best luck with the bat earlier, but he came back strong with the ball,” Beasley shared. “He showed a lot of confidence—bowling aggressively, keeping the batsmen on their toes, and getting well-deserved results.”
Beasley also highlighted the growing success of spinners in the competition, including standouts like Jan Juc’s Mark Zahra, Armstrong Creek’s Matt Kennedy, and Barwon Heads’ Dan Donaldson. “Spinners are doing a lot of the damage this season,” he said. “On synthetic pitches, if you get the revs and drop right, you don’t need massive turn to take wickets. Plus, I think spinners might be a bit smarter than the pacers—we have to think a bit more!”
In other matches, Armstrong Creek pulled off a thrilling win over Barwon Heads, thanks to a stunning performance by Clay Mulgrew. His unbeaten 127 off 209 balls carried the Titans to victory with just two wickets and three balls to spare.
Jan Juc cruised past Ocean Grove in their match, chasing down a target of 141 with ease. Mark Zahra stood out with an all-round performance, scoring 60 runs and taking 6 wickets for just 27 runs. He was well-supported by Nick Hyden, who added a solid 47 runs.
Meanwhile, Barrabool crushed Drysdale by 133 runs. James Jirik and James Fisher combined forces to take nine wickets between them—Jirik grabbing 5/24 and Fisher picking up 4/44—as they bowled Drysdale out for just 151 runs.
With standout performances across the board, this round showcased some exciting cricket and reinforced Anglesea’s dominance in the league standings.
