Houston Crushes BYU 86-55, Extends Home Win Streak to 30

Houston’s basketball team dominated BYU in a Big 12 Conference showdown on Saturday, cruising to an impressive 86-55 win at the Fertitta Center. Despite some early talk of a tough matchup, Houston made it clear within minutes which team was in control.

From the start, junior guard Emanuel Sharp set the tone. After dealing with a foot injury earlier in the week, Sharp showed no signs of slowing down. He scored 18 points, including four of Houston’s season-high 16 three-pointers. Early in the game, Sharp delivered a quick five-point burst to break a 4-4 tie, and Houston never looked back.

The Cougars jumped to a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the game, thanks to a three-pointer by Terrance Arceneaux, who finished with 15 points. BYU never got closer than seven points after that and trailed by double digits throughout the entire second half.

Even Houston’s usual top scorer, LJ Cryer, didn’t need to dominate. He didn’t make his first basket until 13 minutes in but still contributed nine points. J’Wan Roberts, who had shined earlier in the week against Oklahoma State, added six points. Mylik Wilson chipped in with 12 points on perfect shooting—5-for-5 from the field, including two three-pointers—and even threw down a highlight-reel dunk in the second half.

Houston’s defense was relentless. BYU had a rough first half, committing more turnovers (10) than field goals made (8). For the game, BYU shot just 37.5% overall and 33.3% from three-point range. Houston’s defense also shut down BYU’s star player Richie Saunders, who had scored 30 points earlier in the week but was held to just nine points on Saturday, with only two in the first half.

Houston dominated on the boards as well, out-rebounding BYU 37-24. They grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and turned them into 18 second-chance points. BYU came into the game as the top rebounding team in the conference but couldn’t match Houston’s energy.

This win marked Houston’s 30th straight victory at home, the longest active home court winning streak in the nation. Since opening the Fertitta Center in 2018, Houston now boasts an incredible 101-6 record there. Ironically, one of those six losses came against BYU back in the 2019-20 season.

Houston (10-3, 2-0 Big 12) isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The Cougars are set to defend their home streak again Monday night when they face TCU in a nationally televised game on ESPN2.
