Soccer superstar Lionel Messi was awarded the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, during a ceremony at the White House. However, Messi couldn’t attend in person to receive the medal from President Joe Biden due to scheduling conflicts. His team, Inter Miami, and his management informed the White House beforehand about his absence.
Messi, who joined Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami in 2023, has had a historic career primarily playing for European clubs and Argentina’s national team. His move to the U.S. was seen as a monumental moment for soccer in America, marking one of the biggest signings in the league’s history.
The White House highlighted Messi’s incredible achievements in soccer, calling him “the most decorated player in professional football history.” They also praised his philanthropic work through the Messi Foundation, which supports health and education programs for children globally. Additionally, Messi serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Despite not attending the event, Messi expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating it was a profound privilege.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to individuals who make outstanding contributions to U.S. values, world peace, or significant societal efforts. Alongside Messi, NBA legend Magic Johnson and others were among the 19 recipients this year.
Major League Soccer shared a congratulatory message on social media for Messi’s achievement. However, neither Messi nor Inter Miami had posted about the award at the time of publication.
President Biden’s re-election campaign also noted how Messi’s arrival in MLS has boosted soccer’s popularity in the U.S., especially with events like the upcoming 2024 Copa America tournament. After Argentina won the FIFA World Cup in 2022, Biden humorously posted about Messi’s success, suggesting he has a bright future ahead.
While Messi’s award made headlines, the ceremony stirred controversy for other honorees. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and billionaire philanthropist George Soros were also recipients, leading to strong reactions online. Critics pointed to Clinton’s handling of sensitive government matters and Soros’ funding of progressive prosecutors, which some blame for rising crime in major cities.
Interestingly, Messi has stayed away from political debates throughout his career. In one instance back in 2011, an Argentine politician used Messi’s photo without permission for an anti-drug campaign. Messi quickly distanced himself from the situation through his legal team.
More recently, in early 2024, Messi decided not to play during an exhibition match in Hong Kong while on Inter Miami’s tour. This led to rumors in Chinese media suggesting political motives behind his actions. However, Messi firmly denied these claims, explaining his decision wasn’t politically driven and emphasizing his respect for both China and Hong Kong.
At 37 years old, Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players ever. He has earned eight Ballon d’Or awards and countless other accolades, including four UEFA Champions League titles, two Copa Americas, and a FIFA World Cup. With 45 team trophies under his belt, Messi continues to leave an indelible mark on soccer and beyond.
