South Alabama continued its impressive start in Sun Belt Conference play with a commanding 76-47 win over Georgia Southern on Saturday.
The Jaguars now hold an 11-4 overall record and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0. They’ve been dominating their Sun Belt opponents, winning their first three games by huge margins of 28, 26, and 29 points. This victory also marked a significant milestone, as South Alabama swept its two-game trip against Georgia State and Georgia Southern for the first time since the Eagles joined the conference a decade ago.
On Saturday, South Alabama came out firing, jumping to an early 12-0 lead and stretching it to 26-3 as Georgia Southern struggled to find their rhythm. The Eagles missed their first 11 shots and turned the ball over 11 times in the first half. By halftime, the Jaguars were firmly in control with a 38-18 lead, and they extended their advantage to as many as 34 points late in the game.
South Alabama’s offense was well-balanced, with John Broom, Myles Corey, and Judah Brown each scoring 11 points. Barry Dunning added another 10 points to the mix. Broom had an all-around strong performance, contributing seven rebounds, four steals, and a blocked shot. Cantia Rahming stood out off the bench, adding eight points along with a team-high 11 rebounds and four assists in just 22 minutes of play. The team managed this impressive win even without starting forward Randy Brady, who sat out due to a foot injury sustained in Thursday’s game against Georgia State. Elijah Ormiston stepped up in Brady’s absence, scoring seven points and grabbing five rebounds, while JJ Wheat chipped in nine points.
South Alabama’s defense was the real star of the show, holding Georgia Southern—the top-scoring team in the conference—to just 47 points. The Jaguars forced 22 turnovers and snatched 13 steals. The Eagles, who entered the game undefeated at home and averaging 75.5 points per game, struggled mightily, shooting only 33.3% from the field, 25.8% from beyond the arc, and a dismal 46.7% from the free-throw line. Braylhan Thomas was Georgia Southern’s lone bright spot with 11 points. Meanwhile, Bradley Douglas, who had scored 30 points in his previous game, was held to just four points in 31 minutes.
This is South Alabama’s best start to Sun Belt play since the 2012-13 season when they went 14-6 in conference games and earned a postseason tournament bid. Under coach Richie Riley, this year’s squad is looking to surpass their best conference finish of 13-7 from the 2019-2020 season.
The Jaguars now return home for their next four games, including a highly anticipated matchup against preseason Sun Belt favorite Arkansas State on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Red Wolves entered Saturday’s game with an impressive 11-3 overall record and a perfect start in conference play at 2-0.
