Alan Wake 2: PS5 Pro Update Brings 4K, Ray Tracing & More

Spread the love

Remedy Games recently shared details about the upcoming PS5 Pro update for *Alan Wake 2*. The update will offer two modes: Quality Mode, which will feature ray tracing but run at 30 frames per second (FPS), and Performance Mode, which will focus on higher frame rates with noticeable improvements.

In Quality Mode, the game will run at 30 FPS with ray tracing enabled, outputting a resolution of 3840 x 2160 (4K). However, the actual render resolution will be lower, at 2176 x 1224. This might not be too surprising since *Alan Wake 2* has high system requirements on PC, with an RTX 4080 being recommended for good performance when ray tracing is turned on.

On the other hand, the PS5 Pro version of *Alan Wake 2* brings solid improvements to Performance Mode without sacrificing frame rate. Remedy promises a “significantly higher output resolution,” comparable to the PS5’s Quality Mode, as it boosts the resolution up to 4K. The update will also enhance stability, fog effects, volumetric lighting, and shadow accuracy.

Remedy mentioned that they ran several tests to upgrade the Performance Mode from 1440p to 4K. They also added Sony’s AI-based upscaling technology called PSSR, which improves image clarity and stability, especially when the game is in motion. However, Remedy pointed out that while increasing the internal rendering resolution requires a lot of processing power, even with the extra power of the PS5 Pro, the improvement in image quality wasn’t as significant as expected. According to them, simply adding more pixels doesn’t guarantee a better image—especially with newer AI-based upscaling techniques.

The post further explains that ray tracing in console games like *Alan Wake 2* can be very demanding because each ray must be carefully processed for lighting and shading. In a game filled with dense environments like forests and detailed light interactions, this becomes even more challenging. Remedy used advanced GPU techniques to handle the complexity of the game’s environments, such as the heavily forested areas seen during certain parts of the story.

In short, *Alan Wake 2* looks fantastic no matter which mode you choose. The PS5 Pro update is just one of many major upgrades coming to the console, alongside big titles like *Final Fantasy VII Rebirth*.
