Indian cricketer Rishi Dhawan has announced his retirement from limited-overs cricket after representing the national team just four times. The 34-year-old all-rounder from Himachal Pradesh shared the news on social media, expressing both gratitude and a heavy heart as he stepped away from this format of the game.
Dhawan’s international career included three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and one T20 International. In his ODI appearances, he managed to score 12 runs in two innings at an average of 12 and took a single wicket across three matches. In his sole T20I, he scored 1 run and claimed 1 wicket. While these numbers might not reflect a long-lasting international stint, Dhawan’s contributions to domestic cricket have been significant.
In an emotional post on Instagram, Dhawan expressed his deep connection to the sport that had shaped his life for over two decades. He thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA), and Indian Premier League (IPL) teams like Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders for giving him opportunities. He also expressed gratitude toward his coaches, teammates, and support staff who helped shape his cricketing journey. Dhawan called cricket his passion and the reason he woke up every morning.
Dhawan’s domestic cricket stats are impressive. In 134 List A matches, he took 186 wickets with an average of 29.74 and scored 2,906 runs at an average of 38.23, including a century. In T20s, he picked up 118 wickets at an average of 26.44 and maintained an economy rate of 7.06 while scoring 1,740 runs at a strike rate of 121.33. A career highlight was leading Himachal Pradesh to their maiden Vijay Hazare Trophy title in the 2021-22 season.
Despite retiring from limited-overs cricket, Dhawan will continue playing first-class cricket for Himachal Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. His performances in the ongoing season have been remarkable, with 397 runs at an average of 79.40, making him the second-highest run-scorer for his team. He has also taken 11 wickets at an average of 28.45 so far this season. Himachal Pradesh is currently second in Group B and remains in contention for the quarterfinals.
In the IPL, Dhawan played 39 matches for teams like Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and Mumbai Indians, scoring 210 runs and taking 25 wickets.
Although his time with the Indian team was brief, Rishi Dhawan’s dedication to cricket and his contributions at the domestic level have left a lasting impact on the game.
