Nintendo is already trying to stop leaks for its latest project.
Earlier this month, Nintendo announced it was recruiting some Nintendo Switch Online members for a special playtest. They didn’t give many details, but that didn’t stop thousands of gamers from jumping at the chance to join. Now, just a few days before the playtest starts, leaks have given us a sneak peek at what’s coming for those who got in.
On October 23, around 10,000 lucky players will get access to Nintendo’s secret “Switch Online: Playtest Program.” According to leaks, they’ll be trying out a new MMO-like game. The game takes place on a digital planet that’s broken up into smaller areas or “cells.” Players will be able to shape these areas by gathering resources and working together. There’s also going to be a social hub where players can meet up, trade items, and share content they’ve made.
The main goal of the game is to team up with others to develop and expand the planet using creativity and resources found in the game. As players explore the world, they’ll come across new lands, enemies, and resources that will help them along the way.
Some extra details have leaked about how players will do all this, along with a few screenshots of what the game looks like. From the images, it seems like this new game doesn’t use any famous Nintendo characters or icons. The playtest is mainly about testing how well large-scale multiplayer gameplay works on Nintendo’s servers.
This project could mark a big change for Nintendo, which has often been slow to adopt typical online multiplayer features. For example, even today, the Switch doesn’t have simple mic support for online games, and players still have to use Friend Codes instead of usernames to connect with others online.
The idea of Nintendo testing an MMO is huge. The company has a history of taking genres they’ve stayed away from and adding their own unique spin. Just look at how 2017’s *The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* redefined open-world games or how *Splatoon* made online shooters fun and creative.
Fans have been dreaming about Nintendo making an MMO for years, especially something related to *Pokémon*. While there’s no hint this playtest has anything to do with that dream project, it does show that Nintendo is finally exploring large multiplayer experiences. This comes at a time when everyone is expecting a new console to follow up on the Switch, so this playtest could be setting the stage for future games.
Although players in the test didn’t have to sign anything to keep quiet, Nintendo has been taking down posts showing off the game on social media. But since the playtest starts soon, we’ll likely see more leaks in the coming days.
The Playtest will run from October 23 to November 5. The game download will be about 2.2 gigabytes, which is smaller than most full Switch games.
For those who didn’t make it into the playtest, don’t worry—there are still new (and strange) Nintendo products to check out. Last week, Nintendo released Alarmo, an alarm clock that tracks your sleep patterns in a fun way!
