Newcastle United took a massive step toward ending their long trophy drought by defeating Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals. The victory at Emirates Stadium brings Newcastle closer to their first major domestic title since 1955.
The goals came from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, with both players delivering standout performances. Isak scored in the 37th minute, continuing his incredible form with his 14th goal in just 15 matches. He also played a key role in the second goal early in the second half. His powerful shot was saved by Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya, but Gordon was quick to pounce on the rebound, slotting it into the net in the 51st minute.
This win marked Newcastle’s first triumph at the Emirates since 2010 and handed Arsenal their first home loss since April. Newcastle fans now eagerly await the second leg, set to take place at St James’ Park on February 5. A win or even a draw there would secure them a spot in the final at Wembley Stadium in March.
Despite being backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund since 2021, Newcastle have yet to secure any major domestic silverware. However, they are inching closer to their second League Cup final in three years, after falling short against Manchester United in 2023.
The victory also highlights Newcastle’s growing momentum across competitions. Eddie Howe’s team is currently on a seven-match winning streak, fueled by Isak’s impressive goal-scoring spree—he has netted seven times in just five games. Their performances have also reignited their push for Champions League qualification. Sitting fifth in the Premier League and just one point behind the top four, they are firmly in contention for a spot in Europe’s elite tournament.
During the match, Arsenal had opportunities to score but failed to capitalize. Gabriel Martinelli came close in the 29th minute, hitting the post after a strong run. Kai Havertz also missed a clear chance, misdirecting a header from close range.
The loss was a rare setback for Arsenal, who had been unbeaten in their previous 13 matches across all competitions. They remain second in the Premier League standings and will look to bounce back in the second leg.
In the other semi-final, Tottenham will face Liverpool, with their first leg scheduled at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday.
For now, Newcastle fans can dream of Wembley as their team edges closer to breaking a nearly 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.
