Bad Boys: Ride or Die Tops Rental Charts, Pushes Franchise Past $1 Billion Mark Globally

This week, fans worldwide are rallying behind the dynamic duo of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, who have once again captivated audiences with their thrilling performances. Following an impressive box office run that amassed over $400 million globally and propelled the beloved action-comedy franchise past the $1 billion mark collectively, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” has become one of the most-rented films across all major digital platforms. The film currently holds the #1 spot on both iTunes and Google Play, while also securing a seventh-place ranking on Fandango’s VUDU platform, just behind popular titles like “The Garfield Movie” and “Coraline.” This overwhelming response underscores the enduring affection that both critics and fans have for this iconic pair, whose long-awaited reunion has earned a stellar 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Ride or Die” continues the revitalized success of the Bad Boys series, which saw its resurgence in 2020 with the release of “Bad Boys for Life.” After a 17-year hiatus since 2003’s “Bad Boys II,” the third installment reignited excitement for the escapades of Detectives Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Lawrence). The fourth film, which debuted in the U.S. this past June, picks up four years later as the duo embarks on a mission to clear the name of their deceased police captain, Conrad Howard (Joe Pantoliano). As they navigate their new roles on the opposite side of the law, they face formidable challenges in exposing the corrupt forces determined to bring them down.

In addition to featuring everyone’s favorite Miami cops, “Ride or Die” also brings back several familiar faces from previous Bad Boys installments. Returning cast members include Joe Pantoliano, Jacob Scipio, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Paola Núñez, DJ Khaled, and John Salley. The film’s larger budget and heightened excitement have also attracted some notable new talent. Eric Dane from “Euphoria” stars as the movie’s antagonist, joined by Ioan Gruffudd, Melanie Liburd, Tiffany Haddish, Rhea Seehorn, and rapper Joyner Lucas. Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah reprise their roles behind the camera, while Chris Bremner and Will Beall contribute their expertise to the screenplay.

As for the future of the Bad Boys franchise, it’s currently uncertain whether more sequels will follow “Ride or Die.” Despite a sense of finality in the latest film—where years of high-octane action converge to bring Mike and Marcus closer to their families—there remains potential for further adventures. Will Smith has expressed his willingness to return if the story warrants it, and Martin Lawrence has affirmed his commitment as long as fan demand persists and Smith is still on board. In the meantime, both actors have exciting projects on the horizon. Smith is set to star in “I Am Legend 2” alongside Michael B. Jordan, while Lawrence will lend his voice to the animated feature “Sneaks,” featuring an ensemble cast including Keith David, Anthony Mackie, and Laurence Fishburne.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is now available for rent on various digital platforms. For more updates on the biggest films streaming and available digitally, stay tuned to Collider.
