Ghanaian Actress Akorfa Edjeani Calls for Increased Financial Support for Film Industry

Veteran Ghanaian actress Akorfa Edjeani has expressed her deep frustration over the persistent lack of financial support for Ghana’s burgeoning film industry.

Speaking at the 3Entertainment Creative Arts forum on Friday, August 30, Akorfa Edjeani, who also serves as a board member of the National Film Authority (NFA), highlighted a critical issue that has been plaguing the industry. The NFA, which has been operational for nearly five years, has yet to receive any funding, despite the mandate outlined in Act 935 that stipulates the establishment of a financial fund within this time frame.

“The National Film Authority (NFA), of which I am a board member, has been functioning for about five years now. According to Act 935, there is supposed to be a fund established within these five years. Sadly, we have not received even a single Cedi,” she disclosed, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

Akorfa Edjeani drew a stark comparison between the financial prioritization of sports and the neglect of the film sector. “We seem to prioritize sports and other forms of entertainment. Yes, sports are essential and also a form of entertainment. However, while we can allocate $15 million for hosting the All-African Games within three weeks, we struggle to invest even a million into the film fund,” she questioned poignantly.

Edjeani passionately called for greater investment in the NFA, underscoring the immense potential of the film industry to generate employment and substantial revenue for Ghana. “When you consider the impact that the film industry can have on this country—the jobs it can create, the revenue it can generate—it is baffling why this truth is not being acknowledged and acted upon,” she stated emphatically.

In her appeal, Edjeani underscored that increased financial backing for the film industry is not just an investment in entertainment but a strategic move to bolster economic growth and job creation in Ghana.
