Rishabh Pant Scores Century in Comeback Test, Equals Dhoni’s Record

New Delhi, Sep 21: Rishabh Pant’s highly anticipated return to Test cricket was marked by a crucial piece of advice from his long-time coach, Devender Sharma: “Head down kar ke khelnaa.” This was a reminder to respect good deliveries and focus on solid, disciplined batting. Pant’s response was nothing short of spectacular, scoring a scintillating century in his comeback Test, thereby reasserting his status as a key player in the traditional format. A viral video even showed Pant offering prayers before stepping onto the field on Day 3 of the IND vs BAN 1st Test 2024, reflecting his focused and determined mindset.

Coach Devender Sharma, who has mentored Pant since his pre-teen days at the iconic Sonnet Club, shared his elation with PTI after the third day’s play. “I’m absolutely thrilled for Rishabh. He could have achieved a hundred in the first innings too, and I was a bit disappointed he missed out. But today, he was flawless. This century is monumental for him as it’s his first international ton since his comeback,” Sharma remarked.

Pant’s latest achievement brings him level with MS Dhoni’s record of six Test centuries, an impressive feat considering Pant has reached this milestone in just 34 matches compared to Dhoni’s 90. Moreover, Pant has had several near-misses, getting out in the 90s on multiple occasions. The series-winning knock at the Gabba will always be etched in memory, but this recent century holds immense value and comes at a critical juncture.

“Every cricketer needs that boost of confidence,” Sharma noted. “No matter what you’ve achieved in limited-overs cricket, it’s your Test match performances that are etched in history. After his accident and the extensive rehabilitation he underwent, this century stands out.”

Pant faced a tight schedule, making his comeback through the IPL, being part of the victorious T20 World Cup squad, and playing in Sri Lanka before returning to Test cricket. Sharma acknowledged that transitioning back to the rigors of Test cricket wasn’t easy on Pant’s body. Yet, it highlighted Pant’s extraordinary mental toughness.

“If Rishabh sets his mind on something, he’ll accomplish it,” Sharma said. “He trained mainly at the NCA and participated in the Duleep Trophy, which provided a glimpse of his fitness for longer formats. The quality of training at the NCA was brief but impactful.”

Sharma also praised Pant’s physical transformation post-accident. “Rishabh’s physical conditioning is remarkable. He’s leaner and fitter than ever. His aggressive playing style remains intact, but his shot selection has matured.”

During Pant’s absence, Dhruv Jurel made an impression against England. However, Sharma always believed that Pant’s special talent would shine through once he returned to full fitness. Pant even demonstrated his sportsmanship during the IND vs BAN 1st Test by assisting Bangladesh Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto with field placement, a moment captured in another viral video.

“This century will significantly boost Rishabh’s confidence as he heads into an important Test match season,” Sharma concluded. He also expressed excitement for another one of his protégés, Mayank Yadav, who is poised to deliver powerful performances this season.

Pant’s return is not just a personal triumph but also a testament to his resilience and dedication to the game. His journey serves as an inspiration for budding cricketers and underscores the importance of mental toughness and rigorous preparation in achieving excellence in Test cricket.
