Indian Athletes Gear Up for Dragon Boat World Championship at Bhopal’s Lower Lake

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Indian athletes are engaging in intensive training sessions at the picturesque Lower Lake in Bhopal, gearing up for the highly anticipated Dragon Boat World Championship and World Cup. The tranquil waters and favorable geographical features of the Lower Lake make it one of India’s premier locations for water sports, offering athletes an ideal environment to hone their skills.

The Dragon Boat World Championship is scheduled to take place in Yichang, China, from October 23 to 27, immediately followed by the Dragon Boat World Cup in Princesa, Philippines, from October 29 to November 4. In preparation for these prestigious events, a selection trial for the Indian team is being organized at the Lower Lake Water Sports Academy on September 14 and 15.

These trials are being conducted under the joint auspices of the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA) and the Madhya Pradesh Kayaking and Canoeing Association (MPKCA). Approximately 250 senior and junior athletes, both male and female, from states such as Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, are participating. In addition, teams from CRPF, SSB, and other state units are also in attendance.

On the first day of trials, participants were evaluated on their dragon boat rowing skills and swimming proficiency. This initial assessment focused on their technical abilities and watercraft management. Following this, athletes underwent rigorous physical tests that emphasized running and outdoor strength endurance to gauge their overall fitness levels.

Mayank Thakur, the chairman of the selection committee, highlighted that a robust 120-member team from India would be representing the nation in these upcoming international dragon boat competitions. This ensures a formidable presence for India on the global stage, with athletes thoroughly prepared through comprehensive trials and training sessions.
