An illuminating new exhibition is set to shine a spotlight on the iconic Lights of Leamington Festival as it prepares for a grand return next year.

This beloved festival, which ran from 1951 until 1961, was a highlight of the annual calendar in Jephson Gardens, rivaling the famed Blackpool Illuminations. The event attracted visitors from across the West Midlands, who were captivated by its breathtaking light displays, vibrant fireworks, and live entertainment. During a time when the nation was recovering from the war, the festival played a crucial role in boosting morale and providing joy to the community.

Thanks to the support of The National Heritage Lottery Funding, Whittle Productions will be collecting community stories and memorabilia from the original Lights of Leamington Festival. Throughout September, a series of open workshops and events will be held to gather these valuable memories and artifacts. This effort will culminate in a comprehensive exhibition that will include a film, podcasts, and printed materials, ensuring an archived legacy for future generations.

Titled “Switched On Stories,” this project will launch in February 2025. It will coincide with “Spotlight,” a new community-focused festival inspired by the Lights of Leamington. The archive created through this initiative will find a permanent home in the Warwickshire County Records Office, preserving the rich history and cultural significance of the festival.

By expanding on this legacy and involving the community, the project aims to celebrate the past while inspiring new traditions for the future.
