Chennaiyin FC’s Remarkable Achievements in Indian Super League History

New Delhi [India], September 15 (ANI): Chennaiyin FC (CFC), a storied team in the Indian Super League (ISL), has a history of remarkable achievements, including two ISL Cup victories and topping the league in its debut season.

Chennaiyin FC, known as the Marina Machans, hold the fourth-highest number of wins in ISL history, trailing only Mumbai City FC and FC Goa in terms of goals scored.

On Saturday evening, Chennaiyin FC showcased their resilience and skill by coming from behind to defeat Odisha FC at the Kalinga Stadium. This victory not only ended Odisha’s impressive 13-match unbeaten streak at home but also highlighted the determination and talent within the Chennaiyin squad. Farukh Choudhary’s double strike and Daniel Chima Chukwu’s maiden ISL goal for the club were pivotal in this significant away triumph. This match also marked Sergio Lobera’s first home defeat as Odisha FC’s head coach.

In a memorable 2015 season, under Marco Materazzi’s guidance, Chennaiyin FC faced a challenging start with two losses. However, they turned their fortunes around with an outstanding 4-0 victory against Zico’s formidable FC Goa, thanks to John Stiven Mendoza’s exceptional hat-trick. This result remains one of their biggest away wins in ISL history and set the stage for their journey to the semifinals for a second consecutive year.

Although technically an away game, the 2015 ISL Final saw Chennaiyin FC play at FC Goa’s home ground, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda. Bruno Pelissari opened the scoring for Chennaiyin in the 54th minute, only for Semboi Haokip to equalize shortly after. As the game neared extra time, Joffre’s free-kick in the 87th minute seemed to seal the win for Goa. However, an own goal by Laxmikanth Kattimani in the 90th minute and a dramatic winner from Mendoza a minute later clinched Chennaiyin FC’s first ISL Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory.

In the 2018 ISL Final, Chennaiyin FC faced Bengaluru FC at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Sunil Chhetri gave Bengaluru an early lead in the ninth minute, but Mailson Alves’ two goals and a third from Raphael Augusto propelled Chennaiyin to a 3-1 advantage. Although Miku scored late for Bengaluru, it wasn’t enough to prevent Chennaiyin from securing their second ISL Cup with a 3-2 victory, silencing the home crowd.

During the 2019-20 season, under head coach Owen Coyle, Chennaiyin FC delivered an unforgettable performance against their fierce rivals Kerala Blasters FC in Kochi. Rafael Crivellaro opened the scoring, followed by goals from Nerijus Valskis and another from Crivellaro, giving them a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime. Despite Bartholomew Ogbeche’s hat-trick for Kerala, further goals from Lallianzuala Chhangte and Valskis ensured a resounding 6-3 victory for Chennaiyin.

In December 2022, under Thomas Brdaric’s leadership, Chennaiyin FC achieved their joint biggest away win in ISL history with a dominant 7-3 victory over NorthEast United FC in Guwahati. Abdenasser El Khayati’s hat-trick and additional goals from Petar Sliskovic, Julius Duker, and an own goal from Joe Zoherliana highlighted their impressive performance. Despite efforts from Romain Phillipoteaux and Rochharzela for NorthEast United, Chennaiyin’s seven-goal tally underscored their attacking prowess.

In a crucial match to secure a place in the knockout stages, Chennaiyin FC faced League Shield contenders Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Despite an early goal from Joni Kauko for Mohun Bagan, Jordan Murray’s equalizer in the 72nd minute ignited a late comeback. Ryan Edwards put Chennaiyin ahead, and although Dimitri Petratos equalized in stoppage time, Irfan Yadwad’s dramatic winner in the seventh minute of stoppage time secured a vital 3-2 victory. This win propelled Chennaiyin FC into the playoffs, marking yet another memorable away triumph. (ANI)
