Kochi (Kerala) [India], September 15 (ANI): In a thrilling opening match of their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 campaign, Punjab FC clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Kerala Blasters FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Sunday. This hard-fought win secured three crucial points for Punjab FC as they aim to make their mark this season.

The match seemed destined for a goalless draw as both teams displayed commendable defensive prowess and attacking intent throughout. Despite numerous attempts, neither side could find the back of the net until the final 10 minutes of the game, leading to an intense finish.

For much of the contest, both teams were evenly matched. The offensive units kept pushing forward, stretching the opposing defenses, delivering precise crosses, and earning set-piece opportunities in dangerous areas. However, it wasn’t until the 86th minute that the deadlock was broken.

Just when it seemed like Punjab FC would walk away with a narrow win, Kerala Blasters FC fought back with resilience. In the 90th minute, Jesus Jimenez latched onto a low cross from defender Pritam Kotal, heading it in to level the score and reignite hopes for the home side.

The game entered stoppage time with both teams pressing hard for a decisive goal. In a nail-biting climax, Punjab FC’s captain Majcen once again made his presence felt. He provided a precise pass to Filip Mrzljak, who was positioned close to the goal. Mrzljak calmly tapped the ball in, reclaiming the lead for Punjab FC with only moments left in the game.

Kerala Blasters FC made a valiant attempt to equalize in the dying seconds, with Milos Drncic and Vibin Mohanan leading the charge. However, their efforts were thwarted as Drncic’s shot was ultimately overruled, sealing a thrilling victory for the visitors.

The standout performer of the match was undeniably Luka Majcen of Punjab FC. Coming off the bench, Majcen made an immediate impact within his 23 minutes on the field.
