The visionary filmmaker behind “Spring Breakers” believes that the film industry needs to embrace a broader range of entertainment forms driven by youth culture, such as streaming platforms and gaming. During a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, as reported by IndieWire, he highlighted a crucial shift happening in Hollywood.
“Hollywood is facing a creative decline as many of its most talented and innovative minds are being drawn towards gaming and streaming,” he explained. “Figures like IShowSpeed and Kai Cenat are becoming cinematic experiences in their own right.”
He elaborated on how younger generations are seeking alternative avenues for entertainment because traditional movies are no longer the primary art form. “Movies were always the dominant art form, but now we’re in an era where nothing follows a straight path anymore,” he noted.
Korine warned that this shift could result in Hollywood losing its creative talent to these new mediums. “Film is at risk of stagnating, confined to massive intellectual properties or niche experiences, while innovative talents find new homes elsewhere. IShowSpeed is essentially the new Tarkovsky,” he asserted.
He emphasized that conventional films are undergoing a transformation. “Traditional films will still exist, but we are witnessing the end of one era and the birth of another. The concept of what constitutes a film is evolving, leading to new forms of experiential storytelling,” Korine observed.
At the festival, Korine presented his latest film, “Baby Invasion,” which draws inspiration from first-person shooter video games. The film tells the story of a group of mercenaries with baby-faced avatars who break into wealthy individuals’ mansions, blending cinematic narrative with gaming elements.
