A nostalgic journey through the annals of Bollywood takes us to Yash Chopra’s iconic 1991 film, Lamhe, a romance drama that remains cherished by cinema enthusiasts. Featuring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi in the lead roles, the film is deeply ingrained in the hearts of many. However, an intriguing fact remains lesser-known: Sridevi was not the initial choice for the film. According to News18, Yash Chopra initially envisioned casting Rekha as the female lead, inspired by the success of his 1981 film Silsila, which starred Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Jaya Bachchan. But after collaborating with Sridevi in Chandni, Chopra decided to cast her in Lamhe—a decision that would later become legendary.
The narrative of Lamhe unfolds in two distinct locales: the royal landscapes of Rajasthan and the cosmopolitan streets of London. The film also showcases performances from Deepak Malhotra, Waheeda Rehman, Anupam Kher, and Ila Arun in significant roles. Produced under the prestigious Yash Raj Films banner, Lamhe garnered critical acclaim, securing five Filmfare Awards and a National Award.
The plot centers on Viren (Anil Kapoor), who falls deeply in love with Pallavi (Sridevi). Unfortunately, Pallavi’s affections lie elsewhere, leading her to marry Siddharth (Deepak Malhotra). Tragedy strikes when Pallavi and Siddharth die in a sudden accident, leaving behind their daughter Pooja, who bears a striking resemblance to her mother. As Pooja matures, she develops feelings for Viren, creating a complex and emotionally charged storyline. Sridevi masterfully portrayed both Pallavi and Pooja, delivering a dual role performance that remains unforgettable.
Despite suggestions from many to alter the film’s ending during its production, Yash Chopra steadfastly adhered to his vision. This unyielding commitment to his storytelling ultimately resulted in Lamhe failing to resonate with mainstream audiences due to its intricate and audacious exploration of love.
Sridevi, lauded as Bollywood’s first female superstar, passed away in Dubai in 2018 while attending a family wedding. She is survived by her husband, producer-actor Boney Kapoor, and their daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. Rekha, initially considered for Sridevi’s role in Lamhe, maintains a close relationship with Janhvi Kapoor. At the premiere of Janhvi’s recent film Ulajh, Rekha was seen affectionately kissing Janhvi’s poster and posing for photos, symbolizing a touching bond between the veteran actress and the young star.
