Millie Bobby Brown Stars in Russo Brothers’ $320M Netflix Film ‘The Electric State’, Set for March 2025 Release

Netflix is gearing up for a monumental cinematic release that’s drawing significant attention, led by none other than Hollywood prodigy Millie Bobby Brown. This highly-anticipated film, titled “The Electric State,” is under the expert direction of the renowned Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, who have previously directed iconic Marvel films, including two Avengers installments. The project’s staggering budget is reported to be an eye-watering $320 million (£252 million), a figure that could potentially climb higher as fans eagerly await an official release date announcement.

According to sources from Deadline, “The Electric State” is slated for a March 2025 release. This film adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s acclaimed 2018 graphic novel has generated considerable buzz, despite the scant details available to the public. Initially, the film was expected to debut in late 2024, but recent updates have shifted this timeline.

The narrative centers around Michelle, a young orphaned teenager portrayed by “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown. Set in a retro-futuristic version of the American West, Michelle embarks on a quest to find her younger brother. Her journey is uniquely compelling, accompanied by a charming yet enigmatic robot and an eccentric drifter. This intriguing premise has fans eagerly anticipating more details.

The cast is star-studded, featuring Chris Pratt, Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, and Jason Alexander. Additionally, the film boasts an impressive lineup of voice talents, including Brian Cox, Anthony Mackie, Billy Bob Thornton, and Giancarlo Esposito of “Megalopolis” fame.

The graphic novel’s publisher describes the story as ‘Stranger Things meets On the Road,’ a fitting characterization that hints at the film’s potential to blend nostalgia with adventure. The Russo brothers acquired the rights to “The Electric State” in 2017 after a highly competitive bidding war, and announced their plans in December of that year. Initially set to be directed by Andy Muschietti of “The Flash” fame, the project has undergone numerous delays.

Despite nearly seven years of anticipation, fans have yet to see any promotional material such as posters or teaser trailers for what promises to be Netflix’s next major blockbuster. The Russo brothers’ previous collaboration with Netflix, “The Gray Man,” was a massive success, garnering 139.3 million views within its first 91 days and securing its place as the sixth most popular film on the platform. This success led Netflix to announce a sequel shortly after the first film’s release.

The hefty budget and extended production timeline of “The Electric State” can be attributed to several factors. Initially set for theatrical release by Universal Pictures in 2020, the project faced delays when Universal changed its distribution strategy. By mid-2022, Netflix acquired the distribution rights.

Production faced further delays as the Russo brothers were occupied with “The Gray Man,” and Millie Bobby Brown was completing filming for season four of “Stranger Things.” Tragedy struck during production in October 2022 when a crew member died in an off-set car accident, leading to a temporary halt in filming. Principal photography resumed and concluded in February 2023, with additional reshoots taking place between March and April of this year.

As we approach what appears to be just six months from its anticipated release date, “The Electric State” remains shrouded in mystery. Fans are left eagerly waiting for more information, hoping that Netflix will soon provide official updates.
