Typhoon Threatens 2024 Asian Beach Sepak Takraw Championships

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 (Bernama) — The highly anticipated 2024 Asian Beach Sepak Takraw Championships, initially set to take place over four days in Qingdao, Shandong, China, from Friday, faced a significant threat of cancellation due to the devastating impact of Typhoon Pulasan in the area.

Datuk Abdul Halim Kader, president of the Asian Sepak Takraw Federation (ASTAF), confirmed that the official opening ceremony, originally slated for 7.30 pm local time, has now been rescheduled to the following day. This decision came after the typhoon wreaked havoc on the beach venue on September 17, where the tournament’s courts are located.

Typhoon Pulasan’s severe weather conditions caused extensive damage to the infrastructure, leaving organizers scrambling to ensure player safety and restore the venue. The eight-team championships draw competitors from across Asia, highlighting the growing popularity and competitive spirit of Sepak Takraw on an international stage.

This event serves not only as a competition but also as a crucial platform for fostering regional unity and showcasing athletic talent. Despite the unforeseen challenges posed by nature, the resilience and dedication of the organizing committee and participants underscore the significance of this championship in promoting the sport.

As preparations continue amidst adversity, the focus remains on delivering a memorable and successful tournament that honors both tradition and the dynamic evolution of Sepak Takraw.
